-1 - ^ Troop 111 Wins Scout Camporee THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C., April 30. 1070—L-B Boy Scout Troop HI placed first in the Scout Camporee held last weekend at the Whit ten Village picnic area. The two-day camporee at tracted nearly 250 boys and re presentatives of 13 of the 16 Boy Scout troops in the area. Troop 75, sponsored by the Joanna Plants of Greenwood Mills, was second in the over all scoring and Whitten Vil- lage Troop 177 placed third. Mike Turner is scoutmaster of the winning Troop HI and L A. Marshall is scoutmaster of Troop 75 while Harold Rhodes is scoutmaster of the Whitten Village troop. Tries Out Stilt Walking Camp Fire Girls' Camp Set June 1-7 ^ f J. iw r / > ^ , ” V i Mrs. Ann Sprouse of Gaffney will again serve as camp direc tor for the Clinton Council of Camp Fire Girls week of camp ing. Mrs. Carolyn Davidson will serve as assistant camp direc tor and will also be director of activities. Camp :s scheduled for the week of June 1 through June 7 at Camp Greenville, Cedar Mountain, N. C. A1 Undari, chairman of the Camping committee, stated that this year transportation by bus will be furnished for campers. They will leave from Clinton Elementary School June 1 at 3 p.m. Camping is a time to enjoy friendships, handcrafts, sing ing, folk dancing, nature study, hikes, council fires and other outdoor activities. Brochures have been out for two weeks and registrations should be at the Camp Fire hut by May 1. Other staff members are Mrs. Miriam Neighbors, nurse; Kirley Coxwell, secretary and dining room hostess; Clara Beil Hitt, long hike instructor; Terry Spence, waterfront instructor and Ann Largent, assistant wa terfront instructor. Mrs. Mary Seawright will be in charge of counselors. Mrs. Barbara Pitts, Mrs. Gin Jacobs and Mrs. Barbara Young will be directors of counselors in training. On Sunday morning June 7, services will be held at “Pretty Place” at 11 a.m. All parents are invited to attend these ser vices. Everyone is invited for lunch on Sunday. Prices will be $2 for adults and $1 for child ren. Reservations for lunch on Sunday should be made on the regular camp registration forms. THORNWELL TROOP 75 WINS SKIT PRESENTATION ... C. Highway Department. The strengthening and im provement project extends from S. C. Route 66 near Jo anna to the freeway’s intersec tion with U.S. 276 just north of Clinton. Also in the May bid opening is an 1-26 project which in volves guard rail erection on sections in Laurens, Newberry, Lexington and Richland coun ties. The project extends from S. C. 60 near Irmo northwest erly to U. S. 276 at Clinton. The 1-26 projects are among 20 projects on which bids are to be opened May 19 at 9 a.m. at the Hotel Wade Hampton in Columbia. Combined cost of the road and bridge projects is es timated at $17 million, repre senting the largest bid opening in the history of the Highway Department. * * * South Carolina textile plants consumed over one million tons of coal in 1969, according to reports of the S.C.
