1-26 Work
Is Planned
Award April 22 ot a $915,-
951 contract for resurfacing
a 15.3 mile section of Inter
state Route 26 in Newberry
County was announced today by
the State Highway Department.
Sloan Construction Company,
Inc. of Greenville was awarded
the contract on the basis of
the firm’s low bid, according
to Chief Highway Commis
sioner Silas N. Pearman. Four
bids were entered ranging as
high as $961,363.
The contract calls for asphal
tic concrete surfacing for
strengthening and improve
ment to 1-26 from the Lexing
ton County line near Chapin
northwesterly to S. C. Route 34
at Newberry.
Interstate Route 26 is cur
rently being resurfaced from
the Newberry-Lexington County
line southeasterly through part
of Richland County to U. S. 176
near Irmo.
Sloan Construction Company
is also doing this work, having
been awarded a $786,430 con
tract in August of last year.

Army Captain James A. Orr
HI, 26, whose parents live at
402 W. Maple St., Clinton, re
cently received the Bronze Star
Medal in Vietnam.
He was presented the award
for meritorious service in con
nection with military operations
against hostile forces in Viet
nam while assigned as chief of
non-perishable section, Fo«'d

CLOWNING AROUND — One of the
funnymen with the Hoxie Bros Cir
cus takes time out to talk with a
young visitor. The three-ring circus
will come to Clinton Saturday, May
2, with two performances, at 2 p.m.
and 8 pun. The circus will be set up
behind the Clinton Y M C A across
from Clinton High School. Advance

Calvin E. Samples, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Marshal A. Sam
ples, 800 Sloan St., Clinton, was
recently promoted to Army spe
cialist four while serving with
the 3rd Armored Division near
GeInhausen, Germany.
A mechanic with Company C
2d Battalion of the division’s
48th Infantry, he entered the
Army in June 1969 and com
pleted basic training at Ft
Jackson. He was last stationed
at Ft. Benning, Ga.
