Memorandum to parents of
small children and those planning
marriage.
You have no more right to mar
ry and bring children into the
world that didn’t ask to be born,
and not give them a decent home
liie than you have to buy an au
tomobile without learning to drive
it and take care of it The sad
part about it is that the auto
mobile gets better care, all to
often than the children.
A local news story told of a
14 year old boy’s crime which
carried enough penalties to put
an adult behind bars for more
than two centuries. Last Fall he
was taken to a juvenile training
school at Concord. He escaped
five times in 10 weeks. He was
taken first to Juvenile Court two
years ago, accused of beating up
another boy. Last April he was
put on probation for 13 counts
of breaking and entering and lar
ceny. By the end of the summer
he had been sentenced to go to
Jackson Training School at Con
cord for a probation violation,
breaking and entering and auto
theft. He ran away the day he
arrived. He escaped four more
times afterwards.
A Youth Bureau detective at
the Charlotte Police Dept said
the youth “would have done all
right if he had had a decent
family life.”
What is it going to take to a-
rouse parents to their respon
sibilities in providing “a de
cent family life" for their child
ren. The average parent today
expects agencies outside of the
home to provide for his edu
cational, moral and spiritual wel
fare. Even church-going parents
expect the Church to do the job of
educating their children in the
Christian Faith. How can they
do it in the little time which is
allotted for that purpose?
As I have said many times
before, “religion is caught and not
taught”.
How much time do you parents
spend with your children in teach
ing them the principles of the Bi
ble. How much time is spent in
Bible reading and study together?
When your child is attending
classes at church for church
membership, how much time do

day with the younger generation
is that the parents are too per
missive. Its called generally the
“permissive generation”.
Society rests upon its moral
and spiritual principle sand foun
dations. When these have crumb
led as they have, we are ex
periencing the sorry result.
Crime is sweeping the land until
we don’t feel safe on the streets
at night and sometimes in the day
time.
We can wring our hands to no
avail. We can’t hire enough law
enforcement officers to do the
job. We’re going to have to put

Q. Football-shaped, paper-like
wasp nests are found in the woods
near my home. The children like
to raid them. Is there any danger
in the spring in their tearing
these nests down?
A. No, not in the old nests--
but watch out for new ones. It
may be best to warn the child
ren to stay away from all of
them. Let the birds or squirrels
handle the destruction. Mated
queens hibernate in various pro
tected places but come out in
the spring and start building
nests. This applies to several
related insects such as hornets,
including the giant European hor
net which came to this area some
15 or 20 years ago, and jellow
jackets. Mud daubers and cicada
killers overwinter as resting lar
vae in their nests. It's a good
idea to destroy colonies of the
stinging insects around areas of
habitation as soon as they get
started. Populations tend to in
crease as the season progresses.

new shoots last spring. I'm told
nuts from second growth like this
will be tiny. It is better to dig
up the plants and start over?

A. Chances are that the shoots
are from the seedling undersbjck,
and if so the plant will bear
small nuts at maturity. If you can
do it yourself or have someone
bud or graft the plants with new,
recommended, stock they can
bear satisfactorily. If this isn't
possible, you would probably be
better off to dig up the plants
and put out others. R. J. Ferree,

Q. How can I control clover in
my bermudagrass lawn?
A. Spray with a mixture of
2,4-D and Dicamba. This is a-
vailable pre-mixed under various
trade names. Ask your retailer
for it. These materials will kill
all broadleafed lawn weeds, and
may be used<>n zoysia, bluegrass,
and fescue lawns, as well as ber
mudagrass. A word of warning--
they will also lull ornamental
plants and vegetable plants if al
lowed to drift onto them. Watch
this, and also follow label in
structions to true letter in an
phases of application and hand

To remedy this, attach a clip-
on towel rack to the side of the
wash basin, or suction cup a towel
rack to the wall -- low down.
This strategy may also encour
age him to reach for the soap to
wash his hands and face more
often.
WEED CONTROL IN SMALL
GRAINS - Farmers with small
grain crops should begin pre
paring for the appearance of
season’s first weeds, then killing
them early with herbicides. Ap
ply 2, 4-D on a warm day to
weeds such as vetch, wild mus
tard, curley dock, and wild gar
lic which begin growing in late
winter. Get these weeds while
they’re growing and when the
grain is four to eight inches tall
--but before the grain is joint
ing. The herbicide 2, 4-D gives
best results on sunny days when
the temperature is 65 degrees or
higher.
