Mrs. Evelyn Johnson was mis tress of ceremonies and the wel come address was given by Miss Clara Creswell. The guest speaker, Mrs.Elno- ra Summers was introduced by Mrs. Alice F. Clardy. Mrs.Sum mers spoke on “Women Working for an Effective Peace in Our Changing World." Rev. T. Y. Clardy is pastor of the church. Mr. Sam Dillard has returned to Brooklyn, N. Y. after a week visit with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. Rice and other relatives. Miss Marilyn Suber spent the Easter holidays in Washington, D. C. with relatives. Navyman James L. “Pete" Dowdy has returned to his base in Norfolk, Va. after a visit with his family in Oakdale Acres. Mrs. Ester Whitehead of Wash ington, D. C. is visiting her sis ter-in-law, Mrs. Lizzie Garling- ton and other relatives. Miss Barbara Cheeksof Wash ington, D. C. is in the city visit ing Mr. and Mrs. Bennie L. Dow dy Sr. and other family members. Mrs. Georgianna Jeter and Mrs. Eddie M. Jeter have re turned to Freeport, N. Y. after a stay in the city with family members. James Earl Price had a birth day on April 4. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Price of the Mount Pleasant area. Mrs. Zenora D. Babb and fami ly have moved into their newly built home on Friendship Drive. Mr. Albert Summers of Phila delphia, Pa., have returned after a visit with his relatives Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Abercrombie on the Joanna Highway. Mrs. Marguerite H. Hogans, a public school teacher in Wash ington, D. C. visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hunter Sr. during the spring holidays. J. Greer, Mrs. Vida P. Carter and children accompanied Miss Velma Pruitt to Atlanta Univer sity on Sunday. They also visited Miss Roslyn Goode who is also a student at A.U. Lovancie Valene Moon had a birthday on April 7. She was nine years old. Miss Lillie Werts of Phila delphia, Pa., spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Aber crombie. The Jeter family have moved into their recently completed home in the Airport Road section of the city. Mr. Leonard L. Wilson of Washington, D. C. was in the city during the Easter weekend. He came for his family who had been on an extended visit with her parents in Joanna and his parents in the city. Thomas Headquarters For Contest J. C. Thomas Jeweler an nounced today that his jewelry store has been selected as local headquarters for the Orange Blossom national poetry contest in the Clinton area. The contest, open to all young people between the ages of 16 and 21, closes on May 15. Entry blanks and rules can be obtained now at J. C. Thomas. Contest entries must be writ ten on the subject of love, and each entrant may subm it up to five poems, a total of 200 lines in length. Each composition will be judged separately on its own literary merits. Heading the Orange Blossom panel of judges is singer-com poser, Glenn Yarbrough. He will be assisted by Michael Mesic, assistant editor of POE TOY Mag azine, and Marsha Lee Masters, daughter of poet Edgar Lee Mas ters and poetry editor of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Five first award winners will be selected and presented with specially-designed diamond pen dants by Orange Blossom. Merit awards will be given to runner- up. Contest details are being sent to local high schools and col leges, J. C. Thomas states, but anyone requiring official infor mation may obtain it at his store. Coleman Assigned To Florida Base U. S. Air Force Major Fred T. Coleman, son of Mrs. Effie E. Coleman of Whitmire High way, Joanna, has arrived for duty at Eglin AFB, Fla. Major Coleman is an air opera tions officer with the U. S. Air force Special Operations Force, ^ part of the Tactical Air Com mand which provides combat units for air support of U. S. ground forces. The major, who previously served at McConnell AFB, Kan., is a 1947 graduate of Clinton High School and attended Columbia Commercial College. Major Coleman, who holds the aeronautical rating of command pilot, was commissioned in 1954 through the aviation cadet pro gram. He has served nme mrxiths in Vietnam. His wife, Shirley, is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Brous sard of 206Terrace Drive, Hous ton. The employment of wumen in public service antedates the U. S. Government itself. A woman postmaster had been in office 14 years when the Constitution was signed, but Government ser vice was almost exclusively a man’s world until the 19th cen tury.
