HERBERT SPAUGH Is a child conceived and born out of wedlock condemned by God even if the father and mother later marry and rear him? This question is raised by a troubled correspondent, a grand mother, whose daughter had an affair with a man who was in military service. The daughter had her baby at a Crittenton home .and insisted on keeping the baby and bringing him home. When the father returned from service •he married our correspondent’s daughter. They now have two other children. The father works hard and goes to college at night Our correspondent’s daughter is .greatly disturbed because her husband tells her that the little boy is ? bastard child because he was born out ofwedlock and there is no hope for him according to Deuteronomy 2 3:2 which reads “ a -bastard shall not enter the con gregation of the Lord.” The trouble grandmother writes, “I say Christ died for our sins, and if she, my daughter, feels sorry it happened like it did and asks God’s forgiveness, all will be forgiven." Please give us your answer to this question. The passage in Deuteronomy is one of the ancient Jewish regu lations, many of which are ex cellent, none of which apply di rectly to the Christian Church. The whole question of salvation by law or by grace is discuss ed by both St. Paul and St. Pe ter. They even took the matter up before the Christian Council in Jerusalem (Acts 11 and 15). In this case, where the mother and father sinned, they should seek forgiveness for their sins before God and not penalize this little boy who had nothing to do with the circumstances of his birth. The grandmother admits that the father has been kind to this little boy who is now a Cub Scout. Here is a case in which a home and marriage, which had a bad start, can become Christ-center ed, successful and happy if the husband and wife will unite to gether in the same church, es tablish family prayers at home and by loving discipline and ex ample, rear their children in “the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” There is an old axiom which says “a bad beginning may have a good ending. "This can ap ply in this instance. If the father and mother want further explana tion they should go to a minis ter whom they trust for further explanation. I recommend my little book “Pathway to a Happy Marriage” which can be ordered from the “Everyday Counselor” in care of this newspaper, enclosing $2.25 which includes postage and tax.
