Contact Telephone Counseling Service

People would rather talk about
themselves and their problems
more than any other subject. Test
for yourself. When you greet a
friend or answer the telephone
and ask “how are you?” brace
yourself for the recital. The sad
part about it is very few care
to listen to your recitation.
Many people are desperate for
someone to whom they may talk
sympathetically about their prob
lems. Lack of this causes many
suicides.
Contact Telephone Counseling
Service was recently inaugurated
in Charlotte by Dr. H. Eugene
Peacock, Pastor of First Metho
dist Church. The telephone num
ber is Area Code 704/333-6121.
This counseling service is a-
vailable 24 hours a day. It is
manned by volunteers from prac
tically all Christian denomina
tions. These volunteers come
with endorsement from their pas
tors and receive intensive 18
weeks training course which is
followed by on-the-job training
before they are on their own as
telephone counselors. All coun
selors are carefully screened be
fore, during and after the com
pletion of their training.
Contact is a counseling ser
vice only. It does not offer fi
nancial or medical aid. Contact,
however, has established a work
ing relationship with more than
25 agencies and a number of pro
fessionals in the community.One
of its basic services is to guide
people to the proper agency or
professional when they need to
go beyond counseling. Local
ministers form a group known as
“Ministers of the Day". Any day a
minister is available for pastoral
counseling and referral. Contact
maintains a similar relationship
with the Mental Health Assn, for
emergency calls at night.
When the telephone number,
333-6121 rings at the Counseling
Center, a friendly voice says,
“Contact, May I help you?” Dur
ing the month of January, 1970,
help was provided to persons
whose problems related to alco
hol, abortion, desertion, drugs,
emotional disturbance, employ
ment, family relations, financial
difficulties, health, housing for
youth, juvenile delinquency, le
gal aid, loneliness, mental ill
ness, moral confusion, unwed
mothers and requests for infor
mation on suicide.
During the month of January,
1970, there* was a total of 644
calls. Seven of these were sui
cide calls. These are crisis calls
that require the attention of a spe
cial crisis task force. Suicides,
however, are not the only cri
sis calls that come to Contact
An increasing number of calls,
mostly involving young people,
pertain to drug abuse. Contact
maintains a special task force to
handle drug abuse cases. Con
tact has been a tremendous ser
vice to Charlotte and the sur
rounding area. All the counse
lors serve without remuner^ion.
The only paid employee is the Di
rector. The first two years of its
operation were financed by spe
cial grants. At this point, Con
tact must depend on contributions
from churches and interested
people. Contributions majr be
