A Most Significant Week
BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
:* This is Holy Week. Its annual
observance is the most import
ant and significant in the history
o( the Christian world. It not only
commemorates the last week in
the life of our Lord before His
crucifixion and resurrection, but
a$so outlines the most significant
spiritual experiences in the life of
npn.
Palm Sunday opened the week,
in the morning the disciples of
jflsus borrowed a donkey from
| some friends, seated Jesus on it,
and commenced the short journey
; to Jerusalem. As they moved
• along, admiring friends and
. children joined the procession.
• They tore down palm branches
. from the trees and spread them
\ in the road. Children in the pro
cession sang “Hosanna, Blessed
is He that cometh in the name of
the Lord.”
On Monday in Holy WeekJusus
entered the temple courts and
drove out the sellers of mer
chandise and money changers.
The first message of Holy Week
is a call to repentance, confes
sion, and cleansing of the tem
ples of our bodies, our minds,
our spirits.
Tuesday has been called the
Day of Controversy because po
litical and religious leaders tried
to trap Jesus by argument and
controversy. The most signifi
cant of all their questions was
"What is the greatest command
ment?” to which Jesus gave the
classic reply - Love of God is
first and love to our fellowman
is second.
Jesus spent Wednesday inHoly
Week in rest and retirement with
His disciples in Bethany. The
message of the day reminds us
of the vital need for rest of body
and restoration of spirit. Both are
greatly needed today.
Thursday in Holy Week is
called Maundy Thursday which
meant “Commandment” Thurs
day. On this day He gave His
disciples His two great com
mandments - the commandment
to love and the commandment to
service, and sealed these in the
establishment of the Holy Com
munion.
Good Friday offers mankind
hope in the midst of hopelessness
It is called Good Friday because
the offering of the Lamb of God
on the Cross brought good news
to a sin-cursed world. The Cross
on Calvary is an eternal remind
er that it has never been God’s
desire that man should suffer or
perish. In our world of darkness
today, the Cross stands “tower
ing o’er the wrecks of time.”
Holy Week should be a time of
soul-searching and preparation.
As Jesus Christ died on the Cross
for the sins of the world, was
buried, and rose to a new life on
Easter morning, so we, His fol
lowers, are challenged to place
self on the Cross, bury the old
life, and accept a new life in
Christ Jesus.
What magnificant preparation
for that life yet to come when we
pass through the grave into the
more immediate presence of our
Lord.

BY M. L. OUTZ

Let’s plant a garden. Why join
this crowd of able bodied people
who talk about hunger? There are
a great many people in this coun
ty who are unable to work that
have beautiful gardens each year.
They simply have pride and a
great desire to keep going and
produce something with their own
hands. To say nothing of the tre
mendous value of a garden.
It is shameful when you stop
to think about this wonderful cli
mate that we have and yet we
find so many people on welfare
and claim to be hungry.
There just isn’t any food that
can beat those gathered from the
garden and cooked fresh. Fresh
tomatoes, butterbeans, corn,
green beans, okra, and many
others.
Speaking of hunger, I can re
call very well everything we ate
at home was produced on the farm
except, coffee, sugar, salt, and
a few items that couldn’t be pro
duced. That family milk cow had
a vital job to do and everyone
in the family re^feivedtheir share
of swats of that old tail across
the face when milking. That field
of wheat and corn had a much
greater role to perform than to
day. Talk about rice to a China
man.
The whole picture was very
simple, you produced your bread,
milk, meat, and vegetable. But
you were happy, believe it or not
So many of our people today
have no self respect, no pride,
and no ambition. They just simply
exist. This to me is very dan
gerous to our society and way of
life. There values are all out of
order. I’m trying to say, you
find people today who don ’t have a
pump in the well, but have a new
car. They don’t have a home, but
have an expensive boat.
I believe that a home garden
should be a definite part of the
life of a family. And for any
able bodied person who gives up
in a land of milk and honey, they
should be allowed to go hungry.
Maybe this would bring him to
his senses.
Blackleg has been reported m
the county already. This is a sure
killer. There is no warning, but
there is a sure remedy. The vac
cination is very cheap and you can
do it yourself. The loss of one
calf will pay for the vaccine for
a number of years in a large
herd. So don’t put it off.
