portable (toploading, wheeled to
sink and connected to the faucet
and to electricity for each use),
and convertible (frontloading,
used like a portable but design
ed to be built in at a later time).
There are also dishwasher-cabi
net sink combinations. The built-
ins and convertibles are all the
same size, designed to fit the
space of a 24-inch cabinet; por
tables are somewhat smaller and
vary; check to be sure the por- |
table will fit its intended park
ing space.
All dishwashers are much im
proved over earlier models. Most
have at least two impeller arms
for better distribution of the wa
ter and improved washability.
Because ofthe water washing act
ion, dishes can be loaded at ran
dom and many more can befitted
in the same space than in older
models. But, as with all appli
ances, the consumer has a choice
of models with various features
from which to choose.

CLINTON E. WHITE
ELBERTON GRANITE
AND MARBLE CO.
Rt. 3, Clinton-Ph. 833-1448
The simplest models have a
dial control, which can be ad
vanced by the user to omit part
of the cycle if desired. The more
deluxe models have pushbutton
controls with a choice of cycles.
A regular wash may include two
washes, three rinses, and dry.
A short wash may omit the first
wash; it’s suggested for glasses
and lightly soiled dishes. Rinse
only is for dishes you wish to
rinse before holding for later
washing. A fine china cycle may
use shorter time; it may omit
heating water in the final rinse,
and it may have more gentle
action. Pots and pans cycles omit
the drying phase so any residual
soil will not be cooked on. Be
cause cycles with similar names
are not exactly the same from une
manufacturer to another, the con
sumer should find out exactly
what each will do and then de
cide whether having it done au
tomatically is worth the extra
cost to her.
Rack design varies. It's worth
the trouble to take along any
out-sized plates, goblets, or
cereal bowls that would be used
often and try them in the racks
when shaping. Now that dish
washers have such effective
washing action for pots and pans,
racks are designed to accommo
date ttiem. Some racks are es
pecially made for stemware.
Many new dishwashers have
improved pumps and self cleaning
filters that collect food particles
and flush them away so that dishes
need not be rinsed before loading.
These are not, however, intended
to be disposers; bones and bits
of food that will fall from the
plate should be removed.
Optional features include heat
ers to raise the temperature of
the wash water and final rinse
to insure g<*)d washing and sani
tation -- this is more meaning
ful when the water supplied to the
machine is less than the recom
mended 140-160 degrees.
Twin detergent dispensers are
useful if the machine provides
for two washes; the extra de
tergent dispensed at the right
time helps do a better job of
removing soil from pots and pans
and other heavily soiled items.
Rinse agent dispensers are
especailly helpful in hard water
areas, where spotting is more of
a problem if the water dries in
droplets. The wetting agent
•’sheets" water off glasses, dish
es, and silverware.
If the dishwasher is run dur
ing the day, when company is
in the next room or during a
favorite television program or
if the telephone is in the kitchen,
quiet operation is a feature worth
paying for. Many top models are
now made with double-wall doors,
wrap-around insulation, and
other forms of sound-deadening
construction.
t
Portable and free-standing
models come with a choice o
work-surface tops -- plastic
laminate, porcelain, or hard-
wo<>d. Some built-in models have
dors designed to accommodate
slide-m panels to match kitchen
cabinets < r walls.
