ulshe< Lcs Carroll Cattle Production Fits In With Industrial Job BY M. L. OUTZ County Agent I have just looked over the latest report on livestock num bers in Laurens County and find we have 26,000 head of beef cat tle reported, This in duties cows and calves. The number has been climbing for several years and probably will continue to climb. Cattle production with an industrial job. There isn’t much labor involved, unless its a large operation. We have a great many idle acres in Laurens County that would fit well into beef cattle. There was a time when there wasn’t a market for large num bers of cattle, not so today. Ralph McClendon of the Saluda Live stock bai n was by the office last week. He talked about the devel opment of the industry and the tremendous progress made in cattle throughout our area. He actually came by in re gards to a Spring Feeder Cattle Sale scheduled at Saluda on the 16th of March. Mr. McClendon was wondering about the number of cattle available for such a sale. The truth is there aren’t many but I do believe that for those available this is the place to market them. Mr. McClendon says "Imarket mine through the graded feeder sale”. They bring from 1 to 1-1/2 cents more a pound. The reason for this, says Mr. McClendon, is the weights, the cattle are weighed on ariving at the barn He says they will loose 30 to 40 pounds if they stand all day be fore weighing. I attended the Greenwood Feed er Cattle Sale Committee Meet ing last Tuesday afternoon and plans were made to have the Spring Sale over there on April 16. The problem is getting e- nough cattle. But, folks I think there are cattle for sale, and these sales are the place to sell them. To group cattle in a package in large numbers has a price advantage. Moisture from sweating windows is turning window frames black. We have a gas- fired hot air furnace. Would a de humidifier relieve the sweating? Mrs. D.C., Simpsonville. A. A dehumidifier may be suit able in warm weather where ex treme dampness is a problem in a home, but in the winter time it would be my last resort for re solving a condensation problem. Storm windows would be much more desirable. Ifnot storm win dows, added ventilation would probably be more satisfactory than a dehumidifier. -- F.H. How can we eradicate these pests?S^., Whit mire. A. Bats are repulsive crea tures to most people, and any thing that might be done to re lieve their annoyance is usually worthwhile. Commercial exter minators are trained to control bats in many ways, including fu migation with extremely poiso nous gases or other chemicals. The layman might use pow dered moth balls or flake nap- htalene, about five pounds for the average attic. If the temperature is warm enough, the odor causes bats to flee. Plug all holes to prevent re-entry. -- W.C. Net tles, principal Extension specia list, entomology and plant patho logy^ Q. We recently put out a third magnolia tree. One has spots on the leaves and doesn’t seem to be growing. Another is growing but its leaves get brown and fall off. Now the newest is covered with soft black mildew on root tap bud down the trunk. What should I do for these very small trees? Mrs. P.B., Sumter. A. I cannot definitely give a name to the mildew. It could be a lichen. If so, spraying with a material like Zineb should help. Good growing conditions tend to discourage lichens. When the magnolia is given fairly weU drained acid soil and adequate fertilizer it usually grows very well, especially in your area. We have also found that magnolias fare very well in soils of many areas with iron added, such as iron chelate, found in seed stores.
