The Sign-IV for 1970 animal
wheat, feed grain, and cotton vo
luntary farm programs is still
under way. Approximately fifty
percent of the eligible farmers
in Laurens County have already
enrolled.
Eligible producers may signup
at the County Agriculturil Sta
bilization and Conservation Ser
vice Office, 207 West Laurens
Street, Laurens, during the hours
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through
out the sign-up period.
Notices of feed grain base ac
res, peojected yields, and pay
ment rates have been mailed to
farmers. Program explanation
leaflets were included. Wheat and
cotton allotment notices and pro
gram explanations were sent in
the fall of 1969 to eligible pro
ducers.
Participants who comply with
program provisions are eligible
for price support loans and pay
ments on their feed grain, wheat,
cotton crops. Also feed grain
and wheat producers may receive
payments for diverting additional
acres from production of these
crops.
No provisions for diver
ted acres are included in the cot
ton program.

Special provision for diversion
payments has been made for far
mers with feed grain bases of 25
acres or less. Those farms can
qualify for payment on the first
20 percent diversion as well as
voluntary additional diversion.
Producers with feed grain
bases of up to 125 acres may
choose to reduce their base tem
porarily to 25 acres to become
eligible for small farm provi
sions.
The 1970 cotton, wheat and feed
grain program is voluntary. To
participate, farmers must sign up
at the county ASCS office during
the period ending March 20,1970.
However, farmers are requested
to sign up at once in order to
avoid the last minute rush.

Q. How can I clean discolored
brick walls 0
A. Dissolve an ounce of glue
in a gallon of hot water, add a
piece of alum about the size of
an egg, plus a half-pound of
Venetian red, and a pound of
Spanish brown. Apply this mix
ture to the brick surface with
a brush, and your bricks should
emerge as bright as when new.
Q. How should furs be dried?
A. Never dry a fur that has
been worn in rain or snow near
any heat. Intense heat injures
the fur. Instead, remove the ex
cess moisture with a dry cloth,
then hang the fur in a cool place
to dry.
Q. How can I forestall the
danger of white enamel paint’s
turning yellow later after its
application?
A. Usually, by mixing a tea
spoonful of black enamel with a
quart of white enamel.
Q. How can I repair loose
drawer knobs?
A. Where the screw holes have
become enlarged, remove the
knob, fill the hole with a sliver
of wood (such as a piece of
match stick), preferably dipped
in glue, then screw the knob
back in position. For knobs with
wooden screws, apply glue to the
threaded part.
Diversion provisions are in ef
fect for feed grain and wheat
programs. Participants will di
vert 20 percent of their feed
grain base from feed grain pro
duction. Exception for smaller
terms, no payment will be made
for this mandatory 20 percent
diversion.
A farmer may choose to divert
an additional 30 percent of his
base or 25 acres, whichever is
larger and earn diversion pay
ments on this acreage. A farm’s
diversion payment is calculated
by multiplying 40 percent of the
total county price siyport times

“Hog prices have been rela
tively good for several years,"
says Carl Ackerman, “and al
though they continue to look good
for 1970, producers should be
gin to start stressing quality and
efficiency of production to be pre
pared for any break in market
Prices.”
S. C. swine production climbed
approximately nine percent last
year--compared with two percent
in ’68 and four percent in ’67
Ackerman notes.
“But,” he says, “there are still
too many of the old lard-type
hogs around S. C. that are not
only poor doers but will also be
the first to feel the pinch of a
tight market.
“Also,” he adds, “it takes more
feed and time to get a lard-type
hog to market weights than the
meaty kind.”
For the grower who wants to
tighten up on quality, Ackerman
suggests culling and selling sows,
moving out animals “that have
passed their peak of production
or do not produce the quality of
pigs that you would like to sell."
These should be replaced with
carefully selected gilts, either
from the herd or from breeders
who emphasize quality in their
breeding program.
Careful attention should also
be given in selection of the boar.
Select stock on the basis of rate
and efficiency of gain, the spe
cialist advises.
“Rate of gain and efficiency of
gain have a high positive cor
relation,” he says, “which means
that by selecting the fastest gain
ers you are also generally se
lecting the best feed converters.
To make the most efficient use
of buildings and equipment, we
must have hogs that will reach
market weights at about five
months.”
Q. What can I do about cracks
in old wallpaper when I am ap
plying new paper over it?
A. Use masking tape over these
cracks, which will prevent their
showing through the new paper or
cracking the new paper at these
same places.
Q. What is the best way to
clean the keys on pianos and
organs?
A good cleaning wax is bet
ter than soap or detergent, be
cause it eliminates the danger of
too much water being used, caus
ing wood to swell and warp. A-
void ammonia or harsh cleaning
solutions - they turn ivory keys
yellow!
Q. How can I quickly impro
vise a substitute for sour cream?
A. By beating a tablespoon of
vinegar with a cup of evaporated
milk. Many other such kitchen
tips and shortcuts are contained
in my new household book.
Q. How can I make an oak
stain?
A. By mixing a quart of boil
ed linseed oil, three gills of tur
pentine, six tablespoons of raw
umber, and six tablespoons of
whiting.
Q. How can I preserve left
over putty for a long time?
, A. Roll your putty into balls
and drop these into a jar half
full of water. Add enough wa
ter to cover the putty, screw on
the top of the jar, and your putty
will stay in a workable condition
for months. When you prepare to
use it again, pat it dry with a
cloth.
Q. How can I facilitate the
drying of a sweater I’ve just
washed?
A. By rolling it in a turkish
towel, and then pressing out the
excess water with a rolling pin.
Q. Any suggestions for better
pie crusts?
A. Pie crust, in which a half-
teaspoonful of baking powder has
been added to every cup of flour,
will be tastefully light and fluffy.
