Women's World f Bagwell-McLendon Mr. and Mrs. James Alvin Bagwell announce the forth- ctfffiing marriage of their daugh ter, Deborah Jane and Sgt. Freddie Steven McLendon, son of Mrs. William B. Meade and the late Mr. J. E. McLendon Sr. Debbie will graduate from Clinton High School in May. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lewis H. Bagwell Sr., and the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee T. Curry of Clinton. Freddie is a graduate of Clin ton High School and is presently stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He has completed 12 months tour of duty in Vietnam. His grand parents are the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac McLendon and the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McDaniel. The wedding is planned for July 11, at Calvary Baptist Church. Lady Golfers Elect Officers The Ladies Golf Association met Tuesday, March 3 at the Lakeside Country Club for their first spring luncheon meeting. A business session was held before lunch at which time the following slate of officers was elected to serve for the coming year: pre sident, Mrs. Frances Rowland, Clinton; secretary - treasurer, Mrs. Ruth Tallevant, Laurens; secretary for Clinton, Mrs. Nor man Fryfogle; golf chairman, Mrs. Eleanor Acree, Clinton, and Mrs. Sue Brownlee assistant; Whing-Ding chairman, Mrs. Betty Pitts, Laurens and Mrs. Peggy Neal, Laurens. The next regular meeting will be held at the club house on Tuesday, March 17. Ladies are asked to bring a sack lunch. Ladies who are club members are invited to join the associa tion whether their interest be golf, bridge, fun or fellowship. * * * Newcomers Plan Madhatter Party The Newcomers Club will have a “Madhatter Party” at their re gular monthly meeting. Each member will model a hat which she has made. This meeting will be held at the Episcopal Church Parish House, March 17 at 8 o’clock. Legion Aux. Holbrook Wyman Raynal, United States Army, son of the Reverend and Mrs. Charles EdwardRaynal Jr., of 136 Folger Street, Clem- son. ^ The bride-elect is the grand daughter of Mrs. Clarence Ed ward Galloway and the late Mr. Galloway of Clinton and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Eugene Jones of Augusta, Ga. A student at Salem College, Winston Salem, N. C., she was presented at the 1969 Debutante Ball of the Clinton Cotillion Club. Lt. Raynal is the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Frank Dudley Jones of Clinton and the late Dr. and Mrs. Charles Ed ward Raynal of Statesville, N. C. He was graduated in Decem ber with a B.S. degree in biology from Presbyterian College, where he was the recipient ofthe distinguished military student a- ward and served as chaplain of Sigma Nu fraternity. A member of the admissions department staff of Presbyterian at present, he is to begin active duty March 31 at Fort Sam Houston, San An tonio, Tex. Clinton B&PW Member Attends Conference The Sixth Legislative Con ference of the National Fed eration of Business and Profess ional Women’s Clubs, Inc., was heH at the Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D. C., Wednesday, February 25 through Friday, Feb. 27. Mrs. Mary Beall represented the Clinton B&PW Club. Senators and Congressmen from the various states joined the ladies for breakfast in the Rayburn House Office Building on M ruary 26, after which the es were taken on a tour through Congressional offices. Members were allowed to ob serve the Senate and House m achon. ■T •••••• • • •••••••••••••••••«• Senator Birch Bayh’s “sur prise" speech at the banquet in the hotel Thursday night was met with loud cheers and a standing ovation. He announced that he had called hearings May 5 through 7 on the proposed Equal Rights for Women Amendment. Senator Bayh, D-Ind., reminded the lad ies that the Equal Rights Amend ment has a long history, having been before Congress for 47con secutive years. He said the last hearings on it were held in the 85fh‘Congress, 12 years ago and expressed hope that the May hearings would not be a repeti tion of the earlier hearings. “I have in mind success”, he said. “For those who have not com mitted it to memory,” the Sena tor said, “the amendment reads: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Congress and the several states shall have power, within their respective jurisdictions, to enforce this ar ticle by appropriate legislation.” The last but certainly not the least item on the schedule was a tour of the White House and tea with Mrs. Nixon, who very graciously greeted each and every member. Background music was furnished by the White House for the entire tour. ->1 R' Mrs. Land's Pupils To Audition Pupils of Mrs. Eva B. Land will audition on March 20 and 21 for the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Mrs. Spoone began music les sons at the age of four, and holds degrees from the College ofEm- poria, Kansas and the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla. McCoy-Esposito Mrs. Hoy Host City Music Club The home of Mrs. Lewis Hay was the setting for the March meeting of the Clinton Music Club last Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Alan Cook presided at the busi ness meeting, reminding mem bers of the state convention of the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs to be held in Green ville on April 16, 17, and 18. Mrs J. Frost Walker will represent the Clinton club as its official delegate and Mrs. Henderson Pitts will accompany her to the convention. Further plans were made for the Fine Arts Festival to be held the last week in April and the first week in May on the Presby terian College Campus. Mrs. Charles Gaines, club chairman for the festival, and Mrs. Hay, chairman from the Laurens County Fine Arts Council, an nounced a number of events that will enhance the program and widen the interest of lovers of the arts in the county. South Carolina artists are being encouraged to prepare exhibits for display dur ing the festival, and special acti vities for Junior High and Senior High youth will be planned and supervised by the county counciL Mrs. Walker announced a post er contest to be held soon to sti mulate interest in National Music Week. New officers elected by the club to serve during 1970-71 include Mrs. Walker, president; Mrs. Hay, vice-president and program chairman; Mrs. Ron Burnside, secretary; and Mrs. Henry Cronic, treasurer. The program for the afternoon was given by Mrs. JamesShakes- peare, whose subject was “Music and Art in the Romantic Period”. To illustrate the types of music that came out of the period she presented Mrs. Cook, who sang selections from the works of Schubert, Schumann, Grieg, and Boehm, accompanied by Mr. Alan Cook. The art works of two paint ers, J. M. W. Turner and Eu gene Delacroix, were discussed as major contributions to the per iod. Recordings from composers i- dentified with the “romantic”era were played during the social hour which followed at which time Mrs. Hay and co-hostess, Mrs. J. D. McKee, served a tea course. Bridal Luncheon Mrs. Tom Addison and Mrs. Ned Handback were hostesses at a bridal luncheon Saturday at the Wilson home. The lovely spring party hon ored Misses Betty Black and Sara Sadler of Clinton and Miss Gayle Wilhite of Marietta, Ga., who will marry Carol Copeland of Clinton. Also honored were recent brides, Mrs. Gil Huguley and Mrs. Joseph Neely. Pink camelias adorned the din ing room table where the buffet lunch was served. Striking arrangements of mixed spring flowers were placed on the luncheon tables in the sun room. The hostesses gave the brides small silver cream and sugar services.
