All persons attending will be given an opportunity to be heard concerning their views on the proposed by-pass on the east side of Clinton extending from S. C . Route 72 south to S.C. Route 72 north, a distance of approxi mately 3 miles. The proposed im provement consists of construc tion of a two lane travel faci lity on a new location. Related maps and/or drawings will be available for public ins pection and copying in the State Highway Building in Columbia. Tentative schedules for right of way acquisition and construction will be discussed at the hearing as well as relocation assistance programs for displaced persons or businesses. HERBERT SPAUGH Sometimes a man who has a good avocation or hobby finds it developing into a successful vo cation. Such a one is W. Graham Clamor, Jr., president of the huge Southern Railway System which so ably “serves the South.” A biographical sketch of this remarkable man appears in the February issue of Railroad Mag azine. His brother, Robert Clay- tor, is now Senior Vice-Presi dent of the Norfolk and West ern Railway System. Their fa ther, Graham Claytor, Sr., was Superintendent of the Roanoke Railway and Electric Company when Graham Jr., was born. Both brothers grew up as steam rail road enthusiasts and hobbists. Both were trained in law which they also practiced for a while until they entered the legal de partment of their respective rail roads. They continued their avo cations as train enthusiasts so it was perfectly natural after le gal training that they would turn to railroading. So their avoca tions became their vocations in which both are successful. Both brothers still own model trains at home. Incidently, the railroad enthu siasm of the Claytors has found expression in Graham Claytor, HI, who is also an active rail road fan. It was through the enthusias tic cooperation of W. Graham Claytor, Jr., that the famous Flying Scotsman once England’s most famous steam train, was brought to this country a few months ago as a British Trade Exposition. The famous train ran from Boston to Texas under its own steam. President Claytor arranged for two other railway excursions pulled by former Southern Railway steam locomo tives to have a meeting with the Flying Scotsman at Anniston, Alabama. It was a memorable occasion which created much goodwill for President Claytor’s Southern Railway System. All of this points up to a fact which I have emphasized many times before in this column-- that every man should have one or more good constructive hob bies. If he can develop one of them into an avocation, he is most fortunate, because like Graham Claytor, he may one day find that his avocation becomes an out standing vocation. I have long been a railroad enthusiast, as one of my hobbies. While I don’t expect it to become a vocation, I thoroughly enjoy it. Whether you are a man, woman, boy, or girl, develop a good crea tive hobby into an avocation as you go along. It can prolong your happiness and usefulness in your sunset years, when you have to retire from you regular vo cation.
