Q. My roses on the fence are
fine, but ones near the house
are turning black. Could it be
they froze during the cold spell?
I put straw around them when we
had the first cold days last year.
One that is turning black has a
great deal of straw around it. I
have the second edition of “How
to Control Plant Diseases”
by Malcolm C. Shurtleff, but it
hasn’t helped me find the trouble.
A. Your question isn’t easy to
answer. Possibly the plant could
be affected by die-back, cane
blight or rose stem canker. On
page 440 of the publication you
mention thereis a very good de
scription of these diseases. You
will also note that the author
mentions that some varieties of
roses are affected more severely

at one end of my garden, also
some privet hedge stumps. Is
there a chemical I can use to
destroy them and their roots

A. Saw or chop a fresh-cut
surface on the stumps. Apply a
mixture of one part 2,4,4-T and
20 parts kerosene oil to the
fresh surface until it begins to
run off. Fuel oil may also be
used. The chemical 2,4,5-T is
sold under various trade names.
Read the label and make sure it
contains four pounds acid equi
valent per gallon and is low vo
latile ester form.
Treat stumps at any time of the
year, but for quickest results late
winter or early spring is recom
mended. Do not spray or apply
this material to any growth you
don’t wish harmed. Do not use the
same container to apply insecti
cides or fungicides to yard or
garden plants. Follow directions
on the label as to care in hand

cows?
For S. C. beef producers who
have to keep looking for ways tc
squeeze out more efficiency, the
question of the most desirable
cow size for top production is
highly important.
A lot of research has been done
on this. But so far nobody has
resolved the question of whether
a big cow or little cow is best.
Dr. John N. Williams n, prin
cipal Extension specialist in Ani
mal Science, explains it this way:
“Basically, the problem cen
ters around the higher require
ment of feed maintenance of the
large type cow compared to the
small type.
“Results from a number of
studies show that the larger cows
generally give more milk and
produce faster-gaining calves
than smaller ones--but the larger
cows also require more feed and
forage to maintain themselves."
He says there may never be
an answer as to the exact size
of cow for all situations, and
“the wisest course ft for the
cattleman to concentrate on ef-
ficent production and repro
duction regardless of the size of
cows on a particular farm.*
One of the ways toward this
is through careful selection of
females and culling of those which
don’t reproduce regularly. “Fe
males should also be selected on
the basis of their growth ability
to weaning, conformation, and
regularity of reproduction of
their dams," Dr. Williams says.
Another point to keep in mind
is the selection of high-gaining
bulls of desirable conformation,
in order to improve the growth
rate and quality of the calves.
“These bases of selection point
to the importance of perform
ance testing in a sound beef
cattle operation," Dr. Williams
says. Producers interested m
getting in on the program can get
details from county agents.
The specialist also advises
a system of permanent identifi
cation for each brood cow in the
beef heard.
