Mrs. Mary Fallaw spent last week with her daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David Sto- ray in Greenville. Mrs. Carolyn McCutchen and sons of Chicago, 111., are visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Ballard and other relatives. They were met at the Greenville-Spartanburg Jet Port by Mr. and Mrs. J. BIRTH HUGHES Mr. and Mrs. David Garrett Hughes of Laurens announce the birth of a daughter, Rhonda Kay, on Feb. 4 at the Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. Mrs. Hughes is the former Miss Kay Morton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence M orton of Pine Street, Lydia. WITH THE SICK Mrs. Jessie Mae Owens, Mrs. Annie Lawson and Randy Tem pleton are patients in Bailey Me morial Hospital. Claude Gilstrap Jr. is ill at his home with flu. Mrs. Melvin Satterfield is ill with flu. Mrs. T. 0. Williams is sick at her home. Ray Campbell is ill at home and his mother, Mrs. James Campbell is ill in Bailey Me morial Hospital. Vickie Bagwell, small daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Bagwell returned home Sunday after several days illness in Bai ley Memorial Hospital. STUDY COURSE MONDAY “Mission: The Northeast” the Home Mission Study for the WMS will be taught at the Lydia Bap tist Church on Monday evening at 7 p.m. by Rev. M. J, San ders. The study goes along with the Annie Armstrong Easter offer ing for Home Missions and Week of Prayer March 1-8. All members of the WMS are urged to attend. Any others of the church are invited. VALENTINE PARTY A large number enjoyed the Valentine Party on Thursday evening in the Social Hall of the Lydia Baptist Church amid love ly decorations. Mrs. M. J. San ders and Miss Betty Jean Harvey led several appropriate games. Mr. and Mrs. RonRich of Lau rens were guests. He led the group in several group songs and he and Mrs. Rich sang several love songs to the delight of the group. Mr. Rich is Young People’s Director of the Laurens First Baptist Church and accompanied the singing on his guitar. Homemade cakes and punch were served. WOMAN’S CLUB TONIGHT The Lydia Woman’s Club an nual February Men’s Night will be held tonight at the Lydia Com munity Building at 7 p.m. with husbands invited. A covered dish supper will be enjoyed. BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES Feb. 23 birthdays will include Joel Templeton, James Nelson and James Edmunds. Mrs. David Word and Miss Judy Roach will celebrate their birthday, Feb. 22. MOON PRESENTS PLAY The Social Studies Department and Library Club of Midway Ele mentary School, Cross Hill pre sented a program in the cafe- torium on Thursday afternoon. Featured on the program were Boy Scouts, the school band and a play entitled “Two Races”. Characters were Ray Lee Hill, Wilfred Pitts, Sherita Moon and Alfornia Ligon. Playing support ing roles who reminded us of our contribution to civilization were Floree Wilson, Keith Jones, Calvin Suber, Patricia Goggans, Nellie Cook, Daniel Motes, Ray mond Davis, Annie Pulley, Lee Banner Cook. Lula Bell Dendy was the mis tress of ceremonies. Sponsors were Mrs. A. G. Bodenhamer, librarian and Mrs. J. B. Knigh ton, Social Studies teacher. MUSICAL CONCERT The monthly meeting of the concert was held at Wateree Bap tist Church on Sunday evening. After the devotion, Mrs. Ethel Lindsay welcomed the guest. The choirs sang selections and remarks were made by the host pastor Rev. T. Y. Clardy. James Motes serves as pre sident. The next meeting will be at Piedmont Presbyterian Church on the third Sunday in March. MRS. SUMMERS UNION CHURCH Mrs. Elnora Summers, Mrs. Lula M. Guy B. Sweeterburg of Gary Lane underwent surgery at Spar tanburg General Hospital on Mon day. Although he is still a hos pital patient, family members re ports him to be improving. Ball Sr., presiding bishop T the AME Church was Founders Day speaker at Friendship A ME Church on Feb. 8. Bishop Ball stated that he was very well pleased with his observations of church on his first visit with the congregation. Bishop Ball was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Agnes Ball who is the Episcopal supervisor of the AME Women Missionary So ciety. Mrs. Ball brought greet ings to the congregation. HOLDS CONFERENCE Rev. J. W. Thomas, newly ap pointed presiding elder of the Greenwood District AME Church, delivered his first quarterly con ference message at Mt. Pleasant AME Church on Feb. 8. Rev. Thomas succeeded the late Dr. W. S. Mims as presiding elder of the district. CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS Miss Bethsheba Watts and Wil lie Joe Martin whose birthdays are on Feb. 14 celebrated the - event with a joint birthday party at Miss Watts home on Saturday night. About 100 guests from New berry, Whitmire, Enoree, Lau rens, Joanna and this city came and enjoyed dancing and other party treats. Mrs. Leola Chappelle assisted Mrs. Veola Watts in serving po tato chips, peanuts, Valentine candy, popcorn, cake squares and punch. The honorees were the re cipients of many lovely and useful gifts. Bethsheba is the daughter of Mrs. Veola Watts of South Bell Street and the late Willie Watts while Willie Joe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Martin of North Broad Street. BEAUTICIAN CLUB The Beautician Club of Clinton area met on M-mday evening in the lovely trailer home of Mrs. Mary Frances Copeland on North Bell Street. Plans were made for the 21st Anniversary celebration and the Religious Emphasis Pro gram. Both will be held at a later date. Preparations are still being made for the State and National Conventions.
