The New Testament And Race

What does the New Testament
teach about sharing the Christian
gospel with people of various
races? This is an old question
which has troubled the church
from the time of the apostles.
It was a matter of debate in an
early Christian church council at
Jerusalem. Paul was called and
questioned about preaching to the
Gentiles. The first Christians
were of the Jewish race, and they
tried to be exclusive about it.
The Apostle Peter had a vision
on this subject which was re
corded in the Book of Acts, Chap
ter 10. Afterwards he went down
and preached to the Roman cen-
tur ian, Cornelius, and some of his
friends. After Peter had given his
testimony to the council as to
how the Holy Spirit fell upon a
group of Gentile believers and the
house of Cornelius, he said
“Forasmuch then as God gave
them the like gift as He did unto
us, who believed on the Lord
Jesus Christ; what was I, that I
could withstand God? When they
heard these things they held their
peace and glorified God, saying,
“Then hath God also to the Gen
tiles granted repentence unto
life.* A later church council
(Acts 15) held at Jerusalem where
Paul and Barnabus offered their
testimony, the following enact
ment was made: ‘That we write
unto them that they abstain from
pollutions of idols, and from
fornication and from things
strangled and from blood.*
St. Paul later wrote in Ga
latians 3:26, “For ye are all the
children of God by faith in Christ
Jesus. For as many of you as
have been baptized into Christ
have put on Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Greek, there is
neither bond nor free, there is
neither male nor female, for ye
are all in one in Christ Jesus.*
There is no question about
teaching of the New Testament
concerning to whom the gospel
can be preached. Men and women
of every race and creed are call
ed to be “one in Christ Jesus.*
Whereas the apostles pro
claimed the unity of the Chris
tian church, since their times
man has made scores, yes, hun
dreds of divisions. These ditfc
sions are manmade, not Got-
made. Jesus prayed, “Thatttwy
may all be one, as Thou, Father,
art in me, and I in Thee, th&t
they also may be one in us,*
(Jno 17:21). :
Man has made these divisiook,
racial, doctrinal, governmeBtfll,
liturgical, etc., but basically
being many one body in Christ,
and everyone members one of
another.” (Romans 12;5).
We as Christians need to ppn-
der the prayer of Christ and also
St. Paul that there be no manmade
divisions among us.
