How are we going to teach our young automobile dri vers manners behind the wheel and:, to drive with their heads rather than their horns. I asked this question of a young, re turned veteran of Vietnam. He shook his head and said that since his return he had noticed increasing bad manners and, he added “also women.” He con tinued “in Vietnam we had to learn to work together and to consider the other men in our outfit, if we were to survive. He continued, “with the increasing number of automobiles on our streets and highways, we are going to have to learn to consi der the other man if, for no other reason, than to avoid accidents and protect ourselves.” This young veteran is right. Put aside the question of manners if you like, but as this young veteran put it, “we are going to have to learn to consider the other driver if we are going to survive and avoid automobile ac cidents, the hospital and per haps preserve our own lives. Many of our young apbpl^fcp- parently haven’t been taught good manners at home, or when thev were given an automobile, (ana the majority of them have cars.) A Charlotte police offi^tf ad dressing a woman’s club the other day reported on a survey he had made of 40 high school students in one class. 35 of them had cars of their own, over half of them had access to their parents’ car with permission. This is an appeal to parents and teachers of Driver-education classes; teach your children and your students manners, con sideration for others. A number of times recently I have had a young driver come up behind me and if I didn’t move fast enough he bore down on the horn. The time was in times past when I have given these adult horn blowers special treatment by stopping, getting out of the car and go ing around asking them politely what they wanted of me. I wouldn’t dare do it now. One driver tried this the other day; according to a news report the man in the other car shot him. Again, I refer to the remarks of an engineer who had worked at Cape Canaveral in the Apollo program. He said there was no absolute and complete defense against atomic attack. He said the only real answer was for all of us to learn to live in peace with and consideration of our fellow- man. Like begets like is an old basic law. If we treat our fellowman with consideration on foot and in the automobile, we will receive similar treatment in return. Why not try?
