Baby pigs, especially, can’t be treated like pigs. They need sani tation and some tender, loving care just as much as other newly- born. Carl Ackerman, assistant Ex tension specialist in animal science, keeps pointing out that the way to make it with swine is to raise a large percentage of the litters. The critical time is the first few days after farrow ing. “Statistics show that nearly 30 percent of the pigs farrowed alive die before reaching market age or weights,” Ackerman says. Of that 30 percent, approxi mately 70 percent of the pigs’ deaths come during the farrow ing period--and 90 percent of all losses in the farrowing house come during the first three days. This means producers must get their pigs off to a good start if they expect to receive maximum returns. If they survive but are stunt ed, the producer still loses. “More feed and time will be required for growing and finish ing out stunted pigs,” Ackerman says. The key is in management, and he suggests several points pro ducers may follow to help insure low mortality in litters. For one thing, he says, pigs should be kept warm and out of drafts. Dampness and cold will cause a lot of trouble and deaths in baby pigs. For another, they need a clean bed. “Farrowing house sanita tion is absolutely essential to wean a high percentage of pigs,” Carl says. “Wet and dirty bed ding must be replaced on a re gular basis. The farrowing area must be kept clean at all times to prevent filth-borne diseases and bacteria from affecting the Pigs.” See what it adds up to . . . no more ofthat" living like a pig.” For producers who are in terested, these points and others on management are spelled out in Ackerman’s November news letter, “News and Facts About Pigs and Pork for S. C.” It’s available through county agents.
