SCOUTMASTER HONORED The Boy Scout Leaders Ban quet was held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Mary Musgrove HoteL Leaders were present from the various troops of Laurent County. Among the presented a- wards was the “Outstanding Scoutmaster” award in the Clin ton area that was presented to Clyde M. LindsayJr. He is scout master for Troop 178. JANUARY BIRTHDAYS Birthdays in the month of Jan uary is a family affair for the Henry Price family who reside in the Mount Pleasant section of the city. On January 9, Mrs. Mamie Price observed a birthday. Henry Price’s birthday was Jan. 17 and their son, Derrick, was six on January 25 while son, Wendell, will observe a birthday on Jan. 20. Happy birthday to the mother, father and sons. BROTHER PASSES Moses M. Fant a resident of Whitmire passed on last week at the home of his daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bowser. He was a brother of Mrs. Mittie Taylor, a former resident of North Broad Street but presently residing in St. Pe tersburg, Fla. Sympathy is ex tended to the family here and elsewhere. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Dillard announce the birth ofa son, Floyd Jr., on Jan. 18, at Laurens Dis trict Hospital. Mrs. Dillard is the former Miss Bertha Mae Speaks. Sam Fleming has returned home from Self Memorial Hospi tal. He is doing fine. Rev. and Mrs. Alex Jones and grandson, Barry of Union, were Sunday dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Rice and family on Horne Street. Mrs. Edna Potlow of Buffalo, N.Y., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ullysee Williams and family m South Livingston Street. Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Berry and sons of Greenville and Sam Adams of this city were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Werts in the Gideon Hill iectioo of th» city. Rev. Berry U TROOP REORGANIZING Boy Scout Troop 178 will have their recharting meeting Sunday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. at Friendship AME Church. Men of this area are urged to come out and as sist in reorganizing the troop. A small membership fee is payable for the vear. Boys between the ages of 11 to 13 are asked to meet Feb. 7 at 3:30 and join the Boy Scouts. All former and new members are asked to enroll at this time. The membership fee is $1 for all boys. BEAUTICIAN CLUB The Pro-to-wi-pka Beauticiai Club met with Mrs. Vernell Cole man on Vincent Street in New berry on Monday. The president, Mrs. Ruth Glenn, presided wher Mrs. Elnora Summers was se lected the contestant for “Miss Cosmetologist." This contest is to be held during the State Con vention in Charleston. Refreshments were served from the dining room table. Mrs. Mary F. Copeland will be hostess for the next scheduled meeting. BYRD - PEAKE VOWS Miss Rosa Lee Byrd andJohn- ny William Peake were united in marriage on Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. with Rev. T. Y. Clardy officiat ing. The vows were repeated at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones, the bride’s sister andbro- ther-in-law in Oakdale Acres. Miss Rubye Sturkey and Miss Lillian Byrd were attendants to the bride. Mrs. Maggie Foster and Mrs. Annie Walker, the bride’s sister, served at the refreshment table. The bride, a 1963 graduate of Bell Street High School, is em ployed at C. W. Anderson Hosi ery Mill. The daughter of El bert Byrd, her mother is de ceased. The groom, son of Mrs. Leila Mae Butler, is a 1968 graduate of Bell Street High School and has served in the U. S. Army. He is employed at Ascoe Felts. RELIGIOUS PROGRAM The monthly meeting of the Union Religious Program was held at Mount Olive AME Church on Sunday night. The devotion was conducted prior to the wel come address that was given by Miss Flora D. Gary. The business session was pre sided over by the president, Rev. J. W. Watts. Member choirs sang beautiful selections. Mrs. Ossie L. Rice is secretary. Ministers in attendance were Rev. V. Cofield, Rev. T. Y. Clardy and Rev. Frank Alston the host pastor. The February meeting will be at Hebron Baptist Church. CLUB MEETS The Ladles Alert Club met on Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Lucinda McMorrls off Bond Street The living room was de corated with seasonal flowers. a The business session was held before the delicious refresh ments were served. Mrs. Minnie Watts was a guest. Mrs. Aurelia D. Moon thanked the hostess for her hospitality. Mrs. Veola Watts will enter tain the next meeting. Carter Returns From Vietnam Lance Corporal Allan Carter, U. 3. Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Carter of 253 Elm St, Lydia, has returned to duty with the Fleet Marine Force after a 10-day leave with his par ents. He visited his parents fol lowing his 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam and is now on a six-month Carribean cruise. While in Vietnam, he was wounded and has received the Purple Heart He was also cited for his outstanding performance of duty as a Rifleman withComp. C., First Military Police Batta lion, Force Logistic Command in the Republic of Vietnam. On April 27, 1969 when a brush fire ignited ordinance stored in a major am munition supply area at DeNang and resulting explosion endan gered lives and property of the Vietnamese people in the village Hoa Phat. Cpl. Carter, with dis regard for his own safety, went from house to house assisting with getting the people out He carried several elderly people and children to safety amid the still exploding ordinance and burning debris.
