Sanders Says Flower
Beds Will Be Repaired
Clinton Mayor Pro Tem Talmadge Sanders said this week the
flower beds between the railroad tracks in downtown Clinton will
be repaired as soon as weather permits.
Sanders received numerous complaints about damage suffered
by the flower beds when Utility Dept, crewmen removed the Christ
mas tree from the area.
Sanders said, “We are going to get this straightened out as soon
as the ground is dry enough. The flower beds will be fixed back
as they were before this occurred.*
Mrs. Kenneth Fryfogle, president of the Sun Bonnet Garden
Club, wrote the following letter to the mayor pro tem:
Dear Mr. Sanders:
As I am sure you know, the garden clubs of Clinton are trying
very hard to stir up some interest in beautifying Clinton. With
very little support from the city fathers, some of us have dona
ted our own hard work and the bulbs and plants for flower beds
at the downtown square between the railroad tracks, an admitted
eyesore.
Mr. Eddie McGee and his Street Department crew prepared
these flower beds for our garden club members. Later, on his
own time, Mr. McGee has watered and cared for these flowers.
In taking down the huge Christmas tree after the holidays, the
Utility Department crew has practically ruined all our efforts.
There are now deep tire tracks all over, small Juniper bushes
are crushed and broken, one flowerbed is full of ruts, and the
grass is churned up. It is ironic to say the least that while one
city department works with enthusiasm to improve our city,
another comes along with a complete disregard for these ef
forts.
As acting Mayor of Clintgn, I do think you might use what
ever influence you have to see that this particular mess is fixed
at once. Mr. McGee is ready to prepare additional flower beds
for planting in February.
The Clinton Chronicle is behind the garden clubs in their ef
forts to beautify our city. I am sending a copy of this letter to
the editor.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. Kenneth E. Fryfogle
President
Sun Bonnet Garden Club
