Given under my hand this 16th day of Jan., Anno Domini, 1970. J. Hewlette Wasson J. P. L. C. J22-2C-J29 BY SALLY SHAW DEAR SALLY: The only thing that mars the happiness of the new home into which we recent ly moved is the fact that we’re on a party phone line with some impossible neighbors. If one of us happens to pick up the re ceiver to put in a call, a voice screams out, “Hey, get off the line'" And whenever we're en gaged in'a phone conversation they are constantly breaking in either with a loud gran or some such ill-bred remark as, “Are you STILL yakking 0 " Should we pay a call on these people and try to reach somo sort 4 ami cable understanding al»'uttheuse f the phone . . .or what 0 COM M UNICAT ION BREAK. DEAR COMMUNICATION BREAK: 1 doubt very much that a personal visit would settle any thing amicably. Better, I think, to discuss this with your phone company. In m st cities, party- line partners can lie changed. And, "f course, the best solu tion of all to this sort of prob lem is a private line. DEAR SALLY: I've been en gaged to a girl for "ver two years, and just cannot pin her down to setting a wedding date. She keeps fending mo off with all sorts of lame excuses, and tier latest one tops them ill . . . she doesn't want "to desert her p>or old widowed mother." As it happens, this “po r old widowed mother" is financially independ ent, one of the mist socially- active women in town, and Lm sure she w aldn't miss her daughter one little bit. So . . . what do I do now? ROADBLOCK DEAR ROAD BLOCK: Wnat do you do now 0 You wake up and face the fact that this girl just isn't interested in marriage. With this in mind, you should know the next thing to do. DEAR SALLY: I was recently foolish enough to give a neigh bor-woman the name of our baby sitter, and now I'm invariably late whenever I attempt to hire her -- the neighbor has already booked her. And added to this, the neighbor pays the sitter 25 cents more per hour than we did. Don't you think this is unfair? And what can I do about it° MRS. Q. DEAR MRS. Q.: There IS more than one baby-sitter in the world, you know, and either you find a new one -- or try to "tit-jump your neighbor by contacting your sitter farther in advance. Of course, in this latter case, you'll probably have to meet the new rate. DEAR SALLY: I love my hus band very much and think he’s a great guy, but he does have >ne foible that bothers me. He absolutely refuses to let mo hold on to his arm t hand while we are walking together n the street or other public place. We've been mirriod only tw .years, and I kn iw T'm a better-than-average looking girl. S why isn't he proud enough - f mo and our m trriage to let mo hold n to him : n public 0 HANDS OF F. DEAR HANDS OFF: Yours is not an uncomm. n situatr m. There are Ms f men wh just do not like clinging vines, and apparent ly your husband is - tie f these. But since he is such a ' great guy," as you say, stop fretting ab >ut what really isn't all that important, and keep your hands off turn in public. mk> Do not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with uood. — ( Rom. 12:21 ). .1 *'>u> t mph.i'izi'ti ’b.,it \\o should not ivO-t o\ il Nut im- iloi-'taiuliiiv. r t In- working ot't hr law of yond. -onir pt rsoiN ha\ r t houyht : )f wv don’t ro- 'i't r\ il. HERBERT SPAUGH Wh it happens after death? This trerntridously important question is raised by a correspondent who is evidently a woman. As / her letter is not signed, she asks that I give some reply through this column. She refers to a little bo iklet entitled, “Where Are The Dead 0 " issued by the Laymen's Home Missionary M' vement of Philadelphia, with which she disagrees. Whereas I have not read this booklet, her summary of it would indicate that it is not a pamphlet approved by the Healing Order of St. Luke of the Protestant Episcopal Church, of which I am a member and counselor. There are several Christian interpretations of the scriptures concerning what happens im- modiately after death. First there are those who believe that upon death, man goes immvliately into a long period >? sleep which lasts until the general resurrection from the dead and judgment. As when we go into natural sleep we are not conscious of time, so in the death sleep experience, there is no consciousness of time. There are some scriptures which refer to death as sleep. (ICor. 11, 15, I Thess.4.) Another interpretation points to the saying of Christ upon the Cross to the dying thief, “Today shall thou be with me in para dise,’’ (Luke 23) and also to the narrative or parable of Christ concerning the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16) in support of the belief that consciousness con tinues following death. There is St. Paul’s reference to the Christian believer’s re quirement to appear before the “judgment seat ofChrist’’(IICor. 5.) which takes place before the general resurrection. In addition, there is St. Paul’s expression of desire in Philippians to “depart and be WITH Christ which is far better.’’ (Phil. 1) In addition to this expression in Philippians 3:20 Moffatt’s Translation) there is this refer ence later to our being “colo nists" from heaven. Tnis opens up the picture or parallel between Roman colonists from Rome serving in the Roman garrison at Pnillippi which are recalled to R jme at the end of their tour of duty for reward or punishment. For those who have died in Christ here, they move into “the more immediate presence of our Lord " We recommend a little book let, “For Those Who Muiim," published by the Forward Move ment Press which may be had by writing The Everyday Counse lor in care of this newspaper, enclosing a long, self-addressed stamped envelope and 25 cents. I also recommmd “The Gospel of the Hereafter” by Patterson Smythe which you might find io your local library. It is an old book and out of print.
