Santa Parks Reindeer Rides In Style BY BILL CANNON SPLASHDAM, VA.,-Sometime During Christmas: What’sthisa- bout a reindeer named Rudolph with a red nose? He gets at least one day off during Santa’s pre parations for the big trip of the year from the North Pole. That’s the day that Old Saint Nick parks the sleigh and reindeer and climbs aboard the oldest operat ing steam locomotive in the U- nited States and makes his annual run over the 93 miles of moun tain railroad owned by the Clinch- field Railroad Company between Elkhorn City, Kentucky, and Kingsport, Tennessee. And what could be better? That boiler helps keep Santa warm in the cold and bleak mountains as he spreads his own brand of cheer among the children and grown-ups of the coal mining area of southeastern Kentucky and western Virginia. To many of those kids in that area, Santa Claus never has rid den a sleigh although they have plenty of snow around therefor that. But the kindly old gentle man comes as a guest of the Clinchfield Railroad and the mer chants of the east Tennessee town of Kingsport who donate all the candy, toys, and assorted good ies for Santa to give to the folks along the line. And he does it now in the greatest style: on board a steam locomotive, pulling a train loaded with all sorts of goodies and candy! Santa Claus even rides the engine at times and like all others who have ever been around a steam locomotive, he wants to try his hand at run ning the engine and making the whistle cry with glee at the moun tain hollows, calling all the child ren to trackside to see him and to get some of his bounty. The Clinchfield renovated the Number One last year and uses it at other times to pull color ful and fun-filled excursions over their mountainous and beautiful track, but this one trip a year, it belongs to Santa himself. He has been making the trip on that part of the railroad each year since 1943 when the Clinchfield Railroad and the merchants of Jan. 8 will be Troy Dees and Mrs. Ray Riley’s birthday. Russell James and Maxie Seay will celebrate birthdays Jan. 15 also Odis Emery. Andrea Stone will be nine years old Jan. 11. Mrs. Peggy Wyatt and Ronald Pace will observe their birthdays Jan. 12. Jan. 9 will be W. C. Holbert’s birthday. Joe Coker will observe a birth day Jan. 11. Ricky Campbell's birthday will be Jan. 13. WANT A NEW HOUSE? EZ” 0 twill •• f9vr M. M team or m Mm coao try. But these folks on the north end of the Clinchfield Railroad can watch, hear, and visit with a steamer. . .tears roll when the whistle blows. . .and see their favorite old gentleman of the year at the same time. What could be tetter for the kids from eight to 80? Maybe we can get Santa to park that sleigh and come this way next year in style! Some folks in Virginia and Kentucky would tell you that’s the only way for him to really do it right. And he sure does it right up there! * * * Rubber is an exception to the rule that nearly all solids expand when heated and con tract when cooled. It con tracts when heated. LOSE WEIGHT WEEK Galaxon can help you become the trim slim person you REPLACEMENT FOR ‘RUDOLPH' Kingsport figured it would be an extra good idea to share a little of Christmas with those along the line, and now old Santa wouldn’t miss the trip for the world. You know, even Santa is little boy e- nough to love a steam locomotive, and he gets a big bang out of making a trip over the twisting, turning, tunnel-studded track up the Big Sandy and Clinch Rivers. And you can bet your holly ber ries and mistletoe that Kris Krin- gle thinks he’s in his sleigh when he crosses the long 188 foot high Copper Creek viaduct! Santa uses the Clinchfield Car 100 for his headquarters - that’s really the boss’s office car the rest of the year, but genial Tom Moore, general manager of the Clinchfield, doesn’t mind Santa having it. In fact, Mr. Moore is right there along with Santa Claus on the trip and is about as free with his Ho-Ho-Ho's as old Santa himself, and if the truth be known, probably has a better time than Santa Claus. On the trip this year, Santa and his helpers tossed over two tons of candy and toys to child ren alongside the track. One lit tle girl at Clincho, Virginia, merely a hamlet as are so many of the towns along the Clinch- field’s 277 miles of track, couldn't take her eyes off of the merry gent in the red suit, not even when he threw her some candy and toys from the rear platform of the office car. She watched him until the trainpuffed around a curve out of sight. Think about it! A real train, pulled by a REAL steam locomo tive!
