TO BE HONORED—Rev. and Mrs. Marion Du-
Rant will be honored on ‘DuRant Appreciation
Day’ in Marianna, Fla., on Dec. 28. He is a gradu
ate of Presbyterian College and she is the former
Maude Ellis of Clinton.
DuRants To Be Honored In
Mr. and Mrs. Mar ioo A. DuRant
first crossed the rickety, swing
ing bridge at Donaldsonville, Ga^
28 years ago on their way to
Marianna, Fla. Since that day in
1941, Mr. DuRant has been pastor
of the First Presbyterian Church
of Marianna.
Arriving at the manse in Mari
anna, the DuRants found shades
and curtains hung and boxes al
ready unpacked. The house was
ready for the newcomers, with
even a fire in the fireplace. “It’s
rained or snowed every time
we’ve moved, “Mrs. DuRant said,
“and this was such a warm wel
come to Marianna."
In his recollections of these
past 28 years, Mr. DuRant re
members the first of 178 babies
he baptised in Marianna. That
young lady is now expecting her
first child.
And he has married nearly 250
couples. For his first ceremony
in Marianna, the Preacher had to
borrow a marriage certificate
from the Baptist minister.
Most of a minister’s week is
spent in preparation for his ser
mon and in other civic and pro
fessional activities. Mr. Du-
Rant’s rule for 28 years has
been to finish up his sermon
by noon on Saturday, so he could
rest for Sunday.
Mrs. DuRant has also become
involved in cburch activities on
the local and state level. She
has served as president of the
Women of the Church and of
Presbyterial.
After serving as Director of
the Synodical Training School,
Director of the Week-End Con
ference, and Director of the Sy
nod Choir, Mrs. DuRant was a-
warded a life membership by Lo
cal Women of the Church and
the Women of the Synodical.
Mr. DuRant bestowed his own
award at this point: “She’s one
of the best cooks in the world--
a great experimenter."
Listed in ‘Personalities of the
South (1969), Mr. DuRant has an
outstanding list of community
activities.
He has served as Chaplain of
the American Legion, president
of the Rotary Club, president of
the Lions Club, and chairman of
the Red Cross.
For 37 years he has been acti
vely involved in Boy Scout work,
and has been awarded the Sil
ver Beaver.
The Preacher has also served
as an advisor to the State Fish
and Game Department and as a
member of the TB Association
and the Cancer Organization. He
is now serving on the Board for
the nursing home that is under
construction.
Because of Mr. DuRant’s work
with the District Welfare Board,
the County Welfare District Of
fice Building was named in his
honor.
Beginning with the first broad
casts of the Marianna radio sta
tion, the preacher has been giv
ing morning devotional for over
20 years.
His church activities have been
as outstanding and numerous as
his civic activities. One of the
more noteable of these is serv
ing twice as Moderator of Flori
da Presbytery and moderator of
the Synod of Florida.
He has also served as Mod
erator of two other Presbyteries
and, for 24 years, has served as
a member of the Board of Trus
tees of Thornwell Orphan-
ane Childrens’ Home. Along with
these activities, he was a char
ter member of the Florida Sy
nod Senior Citizens’ Home.

ian College and Columbia Semi
nary, Mr. DuRant served as cap
tain of his football team, presi
dent of the student body, presi
dent of the sophomore and senior
classes, and president of the
YNCA.

Mr. DuRant said he wasn’t sure
be would play football--baseball
was his first love.
“I could count my touchdowns
in high school and college on
one hand," he said. “I would ra
ther block. Anything but carry the
ball--I fumbled a lot."
The DuRants were married in
1925. Mrs. DuRant was tl» former
Maude Ellis ofClinton. They have
one daughter, Mrs. Florence An
drews, who lives in Savannah, Ga.
with her husband and three sons -
Andy 20, Durie 15, and George
10.
