NEW YORK—Accidents, the
fourth most frequent cause of
death, killed approximately
115,(KM) persons in the United
States in 1%8, says the Insur
ance Information Institute.
Only heart disease, cancer, and
strokes claimed more lives.
NEWBERRY - Newberry Col
lege students and townspeople had
to stand in line at Newberry Col
lege this week to give 136 pints
of blood when the American Red
Cross Bloodmobile from Colum
bia visited the campus.
“We were overwhelmed by the
response of our students to the
visit," Chaplain Harry Weber,
the coordinator of the local blood
drive, said.
The goal of the drive, spon
sored by the six fraternities and
sororities on the Newberry Col
lege campus, was 100 pints
of blood.
“The community of Newberry
should be proud of the Greek
organizations at the college who
took the lead in sponsoring and
organizing this community-ser
vice project," Chaplain Weber
added, “too many times the fra
ternities and sororities are cri
ticized for being involved only
in social projects.”
In addition to the 135 donors,
over 35 were turned down be
cause they had colds which pre
vented them from giving their
blood.
The sponsoring organizations
hope to have the bloodmobile
visit the campus on a regular
basis.

Social Security
Office Also Has
Year-End Rush
The Greenwood Social Security
Office is well into the year end
rush. People are hurrying into the
office to file end of the year re
tirement claims. “This is an an
nual thing with us", said H. M.
Spiller, Field Representative,
“and we always expect to re
ceive more claims this time of
r
year.” “Naturally too, this is the
time of year when my staff mem
bers like to take vacations but
we anticipate no unusual delay
in claims processing." “I would
suggest that anyone planning to
retire this month or within the
next few months telephone the So
cial Security Office in advance of
their retirement. This way we
will tell them what they will need
to do and what evidence will be
required in order to get their
Social Security checks started.”
Some people’s first contact
with the Social Security Office
is long after they could have
received their first social secur
ity check. This means of course,
that these people have in many
cases retired and their income
has already been reduced and they
are without the supplemental in
come provided by their social
security check.
