Dr. Gettys
McCORMICK- Dr. Erwin Fin
ley Gettys Sr., 71, retired super
intendent and treasurer of the
John de la Howe School, died
Monday, Nov. 17. He was the
father of Mrs. G. Ed Campbell
of Clinton and brother of Dr.
J.M. Gettys of Clinton.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, Nov. 18, at McKissick
Memorial Chapel at John de la
Howe School. Burial was in Over
brook Cemetery in McCormick.
He was awarded an honorary
doctor of education degree by
Clemson University and received
the Distinguished Service Award
from the S.C. American Legion.
The Greenville Lions Club also
honored him with a Distinguished
Service plaque several years ago.
He is listed in Who’s Who in the
South and Southeast.
Other survivors include his
wife, three sons, four other daugh
ters, five sisters, four other
brothers and 22 grandchildren.
J. E. Spearman
LAURENS - James Edward
Spearman, 20, of Route 1, Lau
rens, died Sunday.
He was a half-brother of Mrs.
David Watts of Clinton. He was an
employee of The Torrington Co.
Other survivors include his
parents, James A. and Velma
Hanzey Spearman, his wife,
a daughter, two brothers, a half-
brother, a sister, and another
half-sister.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at the Church of God
with burial in Forest Lawn
Cemetery.
GREENWOOD - Carl F. Grant,
68, of 51 Second St, died Friday.
He was a brother of Mrs. Ma-
ble Stroud of Joanna.

He was a native of Jefferson,
Ga., but had lived in Clinton for
20 years. He was a son of the
late Andy and Delia Simmons

Joanna Mills.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Mary Fuller Motes; a daughter,
Miss Arlene Motes of the home;
a sister, Mrs. Evie Rowe of
Ware Shoals; four brothers, Ar
thur Motes of Ware Shoals, Carl
Motes of Joanna, Howard Motes

Clinton.
