HERBERT SPA UGH There is an old saying, “We strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.” I quote a letter printed in the Open Forum of the Win ston-Salem Journal on Sept. 23nt “I read in the Journal that a large number of magazines and newspapers were willing to pub lish, free of charge, advertise ments to warn of the hazards of smoking. Why can’t so many smart, intelligent, and well-to- do persons or firms attack the use of alcohol, the mostdestruc- ot ail weapons. The people who smoke only harm them selves. The ones who drink harm themselves, their families, em ployers, and everyone with whom they come in contact. “How many homes have been wrecked because of smoking? How many wrecks have occurred because of smoking? Have the courtrooms and divorce courts been packed because of smoking? Which is worse and where does that warning label really belong? Let’s put the warning where it is needed most and stop being so blind and spending money so fool ishly.” In the news columns of the same issue of the Journal, I read where a man was killed when the car he was driving crashed into the rear of a trac tor-trailer truck. Witnesses said the man was driving at about 100 miles an hour and had scraped several cars before hitting the truck. They said several empty liquor bottles were in his car. He was dead when he arrived at the hospital. In the same newspaper in sharp contrast in a picture of our in consistency. I’m not taking up the cudgels for the tobacco industry, although I am convinced that to bacco used in excess is harmful and economically wasteful. But why don’t we get excited about our greatest health hazard - alcohol? We read stories such as I have just quoted and don’t rea lize the truth until it happens to us in our family. Safety offi cials tell us that over half of the fatal accidents involve alcohol. When I helped organize Alco holics Anonymous in North and South Carolina about 25 years ago experts in the field said that 10 per cent of the social drinkers became confirmed alcoholics. Ten years ago the figure in creased to 20 per cent. The other day I asked a court official who deals with alcohol in the courts, and he said the percentage had risen to 50 per cent' When are we going to get ex cited about something really im portant?
