Book Presents Empire Contrasts
BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
“Brothers of Vengeance" by
LeGette Blythe (William Mor
row & Co., Inc. $7.95) is the
newest of a long list of histori
cal novels published by this well-
known author. His two chief char
acters are Onesimus, a slave of
Philemon, whose name is the title
of one of St. Paul’s epistles, and
Bar Abbas, the thief who was
released at the time of the trial
of Jesus Christ. The book is a
richly patterned, dramatic nar
rative set in Rome and Pales
tine during the turbulent years
just prior to and following the
. Cricifixion of Jesus Christ
The author has done a tremend
ous amount of research in Ro
man history during the time of
Christ. The book presents the
pomp and glory of Rome under
the Emperors. It contrasts this
with the activities of a small but
revolutionarx group in Palestine
chafing against the yoke of Roman
rule.
The child, Onesimus, a mem
ber of Pilate’s entourage re
turning to Caesarea from the
trials in Jerusalem, witnesses
the murder of his parents by a
band of brigands, only one of
whose faces he sees. From that
moment on, he is sustained
through the vicissitudes of a
world turned upside down by the
flame of vengeance against the
murderer, Bar Abbas.
Bar Abbas, meanwhile, having
narrowly escaped execution at
the trial of Christ pursues his
own brand of vengeance against
the hated Romans. All the while
he cannot forget a face, the face
of the Man who
on the cross.
took his place the author’s other biblical novels
will be delighted to read his new
and latest book.
With consummate skill, the au
thor moves across the stage a
great variety of actors who par
ticipate in this exciting drama. It
is the kind of book you will want
to read carefully rather than skim
through as in the case of so
many historical novels.
LeGette Blythe, a native and
distinguished North Carolinian,
has to his credit an imposing
list of books, plays, articles, and
short stories. He has written six
biblical novels of which “Bro
thers of Bengeance" is his last.
Mr. Blythe was graduated from
the University of North Carolina
and has received honorary de
grees from the University of
North Carolina and Davidson Col
lege. Many of you who have read

Timely Tips
Lice Control-Lice Control is
important in ,tbe winter months
and cattlemen should check their
herds with the coming of cool
weather for lice. Good control of
lice will help cattle get through
the winter in much better condi
tion.
Check Soybean Fields-Far
mers should keep a close check
on their soybean fields for Mex
ican Bean Beetles, Corn Ear-
worms, and stinkbugs. These in
sects may be controlled by using
Ethyl papathion, Methyl parathion
of Sevin.
Soil Samples-Now is the time to
take soil samples and do first
plowing for small rain crops.
Rice Grains-Rice grains will
stay separate and white if cooked
in water to which a teaspoon of
lemon has been added for each
quart.
Turnips-Lessen the odor of
cooking turnips by adding a tea
spoon of sugar to the water.
They’ll be more flavorful, too.
Eliminate waste-Eliminate
waste when measuring molasses
by greasing the cup lightly.
