Don Harrelson has entered the
Columbia Commercial College
in Columbia.
Mrs. Nellie Dolan and Mr. and
Mrs. J. B. Dolan of Atlanta
visited with Mr. and Mrs. P. F.
Swygert for the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Bozard,
Martin and Margaret, and Mrs.
J. M, Bozard spent Sunday in
Pendleton with Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth Griffis.
Mrs. Ralph Bragg of Aiken
visited Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bragg
on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Brock and
son, Jeff of Atlanta spent sev
eral days last week with Mrs. L.

weekend and attended the races
there on Labor Day.
Mrs. Lestes Sweat ofNash-
ville, Tenn., has returned to her
home after being here several
days with Mr. and Mrs. W. R.
Lanford. Mr. Lanford continues
a patient at Bailey Memorial Hos
pital. Another visitor of the Land-
fords was Jack Foster of Greer.
Mrs. Janet Reeder recent
ly made a trip with Mrs. Kath
leen Willard and Bill to Durham
N. C. Last Sunday Mrs. Mable
Roberts of Spartanburg visited
Mrs. Reeder and children.
SURPRISE PARTY
Danny Thomas, who was 10 on
Sept. 6, was given a surprise
birthday party on the same day
in the afternoon. His sister, Deb
bie, and his mother Mrs. Richard
Thomas gave the party. Each
guests received a party hat and
a favor. Games to suit the occa
sion were played. Danny was re
membered with many nice gifts.
The children were served ice
cream, decorated cup cakes,
nuts, and cokes.
ON TOUR
Billy Byars entered his junior
year at Furman on Tuesday. Sev
eral days this week a group of
biology majors are in Oak Ridge,
Tenn., for a tour on Atomic
Energy Commission.
GOSPEL SINGING
On Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2:30
p.m. there will be a gospel sing
ing at Faith Tabernacle featuring
Harley Ford and local talent.
The pastor, Rev. John Martin
invites the public to attend.

McCormick Man Heads
Savannah Development
GREENWOOD - A McCormick
County man has been elected
Chairman of the Upper Savannah
Development District, the re
gional planning and develop
ment agency for the six counties
of Abbeville, Edgefield, Green
wood, Laurens, McCormick, and
Saluda.
J. R. Wilkie of Plum Branch,
a native of McCormick County,
assumed his new duties Sept. 1.
He succeeds Clayto L. Roberts
of Greenwood, who served as
Chairman from May, 1967, to
August of this year.
Wilkie has been a member of
the Board of Directors of the
Upper Savannah Development
District since origination of the
District program in 1967. Wilkie
enlisted in the U. S. Army in
1941, and after the war served
in the Corps of Engineers, re
tiring with the rank of Major in
1962. He returned to Plum Branch
where he is a cattle and timber
farmer.
Clayto L. Roberts was the
first Chairman elected by the
Upper Savannah Development
District Board of Directors when
the planning and development a-
gency was established in 1967.
A native of Pelzer, Roberts at
tended Presbyterian College and
is a former State Director of the
S. C. Jaycee’s. Roberts is cur
rently serving as Chairman of
the Greenwood County Board
of Education.
During Roberts two year ten
ure as Chairman, the USDD of
fice has participated in more
than 30 planning and development
projects in the six counties, and
these total project involvements
exceed $6.5 million.
