THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C., September 4, 196&-5-B
Dear Sally
BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: I'm a married
woman of 39, and very much con
cerned about my unmarried kid
brother. He has been chasing
around with a young, red-headed
divorcee -- entirely the wrong
kind of woman for him, and I’m
sure she goes with him only be
cause be happens to be well fixed
financially and can spend a lot
of money on good times for
her. I’ve tried my best to rea
son with him, but he refuses to
accept the fact that my eight
years of seniority over him
should make me more qualified
than he to judge such things. What
else can I do to get across to
him? BIG SETER.
DEAR BIG SETER: Your bro
ther at 31 is NOT "a kid," and if
at this age be|till doesn’t know
how to manage mis life, then he
never will. In any event, my ad
vice to you is to stay out of this
and let him live his life as he
pleases.
DEAR SALLY: I am in love
with a fine young man of 24 who
is not yet financially solid, and
has a position with a large com
pany with excellent prospects but
which at present pays him com
paratively little. He is filled with
all sorts of ambition and confi
dence that some day he will rise
high in the company. He wants
very much for us to be married,
but I keep wondering if it wouldn’t
be smarter for us to wait until
he is more firmly established.
HESITANT.
DEAR HESITANT: Why wait
until AFTER he’s arrived? This
could stretch into, a long time. If
you’re in love with each other
and he’s armed with all that am
bition and confidence, you could
enjoy a good and happy mar
riage SHARING in his climb up
the ladder of success.
DEAR SALLY: A very attrac
tive man I have been dating for
some time has shocked me
through and through with the news
that he is married! He followed
this news with the explanation that
his wife is a bed-ridden invalid,
has been for several years, and
this has made him lc«ely and hun
gry for the companionship of a
good woman. He says I can give
him much happiness just by going
out with him, that we could keep
everything strictly on a “friend
ship basis." Do you think this
would work out? C. C.
DEAR C. C.: No. Steer clear
of involvement with a man who
seems to have forgotten com
pletely the sacred vow he once
took to cherish his wife 'insick
ness and in health."
DEAR SALLY: My girl friend
and I are about to become en
gaged, and she has told me that
her father will soon be wanting
to have a little heart-to-heart
talk with me. . .regarding my
financial status and my ability to
provide for her. I have nothing
to hide or to be ashamed of in
this respect, but still I am won-
How Can I?
BY ANNE ASHLEY
Q. How can I remove scorch
stains from white shirts?
A. If the scorch is light, and
not burned in too deeply, you can
try this: Cut a piece of tissue
paper large enough to cover the
spot, then drop a little peroxide
on the tissue and while still wet,
place a heated iron over the tis
sue. Often, when the tissue is
removed, the scorch will have
vanished.
Q. I’ve been using clear fin
gernail polish to stop runs or
snags in my nylon stockings, but
it always turns white after I
wash my hose. How about this?
A. Try using beige or gold-
tinted polish, instead of clear.
Q. How can I improvise an ink
blotter when the real thing is not
at hand?
A. Facial tissues make fine
blotters. . .often better than the
real thing!
Q. How can I make a thorough
job of cleaning the insides of
vacuum bottles?
A. Drop torn-up scraps of pa
per inside the bottle, add a lit
tle bicarbonate of soda and warm
water, then shake the whole busi
ness well. After this cleaning job,
be sure to leave the bottle un
corked, open to the air.
Q. How can I remove ink stains
from carpets?
A. Sponge with water, working
from the edges of the stain to
wards the center. Only washable
inks, however, can be dealt with at
home. Best to call a professional
for the removal of others.
Q. What can I do when some of
my homemade soup seems to have
an excess of fat in it?
A. You can usually remedy the
situation by gently stirring the
surface of the soup with an ice
cube wrapped in a clean cloth.
The fat will congeal on the cold
surface, and can then be lifted
out of the soup.
Q. How can I clean badly soiled
ceramic tile floors?
A. Try washing them with one
tablespoon of turpentine mixed
with a gallon of water. This usu
ally does an excellent job. Many
other such tips on cleaning are
contained in my new household
book.
Q. How can I soften the leather
in a pair of inexpensive shoes?
A. Try inserting a couple of
scrubbed potatoes in each shoe
and letting them stand this way
overnight.
Q. How can I clean that gum
my residue out of ashtrays?
A. With denatured alcohol.

DEAR SOON: Although this sort
of discussion between a father and
his prospective son-in-law is not
so common as in yesteryear, still
it cannot be called “old-fash
ioned" or “out-of-date" for any
father to be concerned about #8
daughter’s future happiness find
well-being.
