Fort Benning, Ga. spent the week
end with Mrs. McCravey and
Lisa, and Mr. and Mrs. John
Sirmans. He recently returned
from a years’ tour of duty in Ger
many.
Mrs. Delia Higginbotham and
Mrs. Clara Higginbotham of An
derson spent last Tuesday and
Wednesday with their sister-in-
law, Mrs. Cancie Brown.
Mrs. Idell Shipp enjoyed the
weekend in Spartanburg visit
ing relatives.
Mrs. Dollie M. Carr had as
guests on Sunday afternoon Miss
Roberta Bryson and Mrs. Deree
Abrams of Owings. Friends will
be interested to know that Mrs.
Carr, who has been living in
Joanna for 40 years, is moving
this week to Rock Hill where
she will make her home.
Mrs. Delia Russell is spend
ing this week in Clinton with her
daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Donald Brown. Mrs. Brown
underwent surgery on Monday at
Bailey Memorial Hospital.
Jimmy E. Heaton was recently
promoted to Specialist 5thClass.
He is a fire control operator
for the Nike Missile at the base
in Germany. He and his wife,
the former, Sara Sellers, live
in Rockenhausen, Germany.

will be held near Hartsville at
the Lakeview Community Cen

A former pastor, Rev. James
B. Mitchell, will preach at the
regular morning worship service
this Sunday at the First Bap
tist Church. Mr. Mitchell, of
Columbia, is the Assistant Ad
ministrator at the Baptist Hospi
tal in Columbia.

has been decorated with the
Bronze Star Medal at Robins
AFB, Ga., for meritorious ser-
vice while engaged in military
Henderson Unit
Wins AF Award
Sergeant Frank C. Henderson,
son of Mrs. Belle S. Henderson
of 317 Ferguson St., Clinton, is
a member of a unit that has earn
ed the U. S. Air Force Out
standing Unit Award for the third
consecutive year.
Sergeant Henderson, an air
craft mechanic in the 12th Tac
tical Fighter Wing at Cam Ranh
Bay AB, Vietnam, will wear the
distinctive ribbon to mark his af
filiation with the unit.
The 12th, the first F-4 Phan-
ton wing to operate in Vietnam,
was cited for flying 23,000 com
bat sorties with skill and pro
fessionalism during the period
from June 1, 1967 to May 31,
1968.
The sergeant is a graduate of
Ford High School in Laurens.

Naval Air School
Airman LucienE. McKee, USN,
son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mc

ton, is attending the Aviation
Electricians School at the Naval
Air Technical Training Center,
Jacksonville, Fla.
He is studying the fundament
als of electricity, electronics
aircraft electrical and instru
ment systems, troubleshooting,
and repair of aircraft electrical
parts.
Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Boyce
visited Mr. and Mrs. Guy Mis-
enhiemer in Chester on Sunday
afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Bedenbaugh
visited Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mor
gan in Greenville on Friday and
their grandchildren Tammy and
Joey, returned with them for the
weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan
came for them on Sunday.
GIVES PARTY
Following the worship service
on Sunday evening at the First
Baptist Church, the young peo
ple, who will be leaving for col
lege soon, was given a party
by Miss Dale Nabors. It was
held at the home of Dale’s
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carson
Nabors, on Sunset Blvd.
Miss Ruth Hair visited Dr.
and Mrs. L. Byron Harbin in
Montgomery, Ala., recently, on
her return trip after spending
several weeks in Columbia, La.
with Mrs. Homer Echols. Another
high-light of the trip was spend
ing a weekend in New Orleans
with Mrs. Eloise Fluitt. Also,
Miss Hair, Mrs. Echols, Mrs.
Helen Mouser and Mrs. Elenor
DiUon enjoyed a week at Maga
zine Mountain in the Ozarks.
RETURNS FROM VIETNAM
Sgt. Wallace Sanford of
Twy Hoa AFB returned on Aug.
4 after a years’ tour of duty in
Vietnam. He’s spending a months'
leave with his wife and children
and other relatives. Following
his leave he will report to Lang
ley AFB in Virginia. Mrs. San
ford will follow him at a later
date.
MISCELLANEOUS SHOWER
On. Thursday evening, Aug. 14,
Mrs. Linda (Lollis)Oxendine was
honored with a miscellaneous
shower at the Joanna Club House.
Games to suit the occasion were
enjoyed by all. Party refresh
ments were served by the
hostesses, Mrs. Vicki Reid,Judy
Taylor and Mrs. Christine Lol-
lis. The honoree was remember
ed with a number of gifts.
Alan Petty was a patient at
the local hospital a few days last
week.
MOVING TO PENNSYLVANIA
Mr. and Mrs. Benton Lutz, both
May graduates of Presbyterian
College will be moving to Gettys
burg, Penn., on August 24 where
Mr. Lutz who is from Sumter,
will begin studies at the Lutheran
Theological Seminary there and
Mrs. Lutz the former Maxine
Fell of Foley, Ala., will be teach
ing in the field of Special Educa
tion. They have made their home
at the Presbyterian Manse at
Little - River Dominick Church
during the summer months. Mr.
Lutz has been student supply pas
tor there and at the First Pres
byterian Church in Joanna during
that time.

Graduates From
Officer School
Captain Glenn B. Reaves, son
of Mrs. James C. Simpson, 609
Whitmire Highway, Joanna, has
graduated from the Air Univer
sity's Squadron Officer School at
Maxwell AFB, Ala.
Captain Reaves was specially
selected for the 14-week pro
fessional officer course in re
cognition of his potential as a
leader in the aerospace force.
The captain is being reassigned
to McCoy AFB, Fla., as an elec
tronic warfare officer. He was
commissioned in 1063 upon com
pletion of Officer TrainingSchool
at Lackland AFB, Tex.
A 1956 graduate ofClintonHigh
School, he attended Presbyterian
College and earned his B.S. de
gree at Oklahoma State Univer
sity. He is a member of Kappa
Alpha Order.
His wife, Tonita, is the daugh
ter of Mrs. DavisV. Pitts, Shands
Extension, Clinton.
REV. HAMM
Hamm Receives
Award From Navy
Rev. Horace A. Hamm, son of
Mrs. Bessie Hamm of Joanna and
the late Horace (Buddy) Hamm,
received an award from the U.
S. Navy Department for his acti
vity in the world wide communi
cations program, Military Af
filiate Radio Stations, better
known as MARS.
The award was presented dur
ing the morning worship service
at Island Home Baptist Church,
Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. Hamm is
pastor at Island Home Baptist
Church and an active member of
the U. S. Naval Chaplain Corps
Reserve, holding the rank of
Lieutenant.
During the presentation it was
pointed out that numliers of ser
vicemen throughout the world
had been able to talk personally
with their families through the
efforts of Chaplain Hamm.

son-Newman College and South
eastern Baptist Theological
Seminary, is married to the for
mer Eugenia Shull of Mountain

Clinton Exchange Club
Wins Big E' Award
The Exchange Club of Clinton,
has won the National Exchange
Club’s BIG “E” Award for Ex
cellence it was announced today at
the national organization’s 51st
annual convention in Los Angeles,
Calif. The award is presented
annually to Exchange Clubs meet
ing high standards of efficiency,
growth and community service.
Lee Wells, Toledo, Ohio,
executive secretary of the
largest strictly national, men’s
service club organization, said
238 Exchange Clubs qualified for
the award during the 12 months
which ended June 30, 1969. The
winners represented 21 percent
of all Exchange Clubs.
Winning clubs were required to
actively participate in The Nat
ional Exchange Club’s Freedom
Shrine and National Crime Pre
vention Week programs plus at
least one other community ser
vice project. Also, they had to
meet requirements of excellence
in operational efficiency and ex
pand their own memberships or
establish new Exchange Clubs.
“We congratulate the Exchange
Club of Clinton upon its splen
did achievement,"Mr. Wells said
“Our award-winning Clubs, in at
taining the required standard of
excellence, become more valu
able to their communities there
by increasing their contributions
to our total national effort to
make America an ever better
place in which to live."

ward, consisting of a banner for
the club and distinctive BIG “E”
tabs for the members’ lapel em
blem pins, will be made later by
