Adair is on leave of absence from North American Rockwell, the company that manufactures the giant Saturn booster rocket and the command module that the astronauts ride into space. He was closely associated with the building of the second stage of the rocket that enabled man to leave this planet. When asked his opinion of the space race, he said, “I believe that all of this is very neces sary despite all of the money that it is costing us. The tech nological and scientific advances that have been developed in this program are really to many to number.’ ROBERT ADAIR Adair also is concerned about the large cutback in funds that the program has been forced to suffer. He said, “Congress seems to take a dim view of the space race because of the tremendous amount of money that it has taken, but I believe that our investment will be returned a hundred-fold with the advances that this pro gram offers to the American peo ple and to the world.’ He ex pressed optimism that the suc cess of Apollo 11 would convince reluctant legislators that the space race is necessary and va lid. When asked about the beginning of the space program and how North American Rockwell got the space contract in the first place, Adair said it was because North America agreed to build the ve hicle in a vertical rather than a horizontal position. NASA wanted it constructed in this manner because it would make the giant rocket easier to transport and put into place. These disturbances would indicate that the moon’s interior is molten, like that of the earth. Another instrument will transmit laser beams that can be reflect ed on the earth. This instrument will assist future space travelers to determine distances more pre cisely as they travel through space. Adair believes that the next space target will be Mars. He pointed out that Dr. Thomas Paine, NASA's chief adminis trator, has predicted that Ameri cans will be on Mars by 1981. Great advances must be made be fore such a trip would be pos sible.
