came from William H. Baldwin,

Foundation. It is conditioned upon
raising the balance of the funds
needed for the building by next

jor objectives of PC’s current

ing conducted in the Synod of

MRS. SHIELDS DEMONSTRATES GROOMING PROCEDURE
Dog-Gone, It's Really A
Poodle Grooming Salon
MRS. RICK

NELSON PICKS UP POODLE
Has Been Groomed By Mrs. Shields
BY ERNIE SEGARS
A poodle boutique may seem a
bit much for some, but to Mrs.
L. B. (Kathy) Shields of Clinton,
it is a serious and very practi
cal business. Mrs. Shields is cur
rently in the final planning stages
before the opening of the Clip and
Snip Canine Salon on 104 Pitts
Street here in Clinton. The salon
is scheduled for opening on the
first Monday in August.
Mrs. Shields has been groom
ing poodles part-time for about
five years. She received pro
fessional instruction in Columbia
from Mrs. Dorothy Lowry, a pro
fessional groomer of poodles.
Since coming to Clinton, Mrs.
Shields has groomed the dogs
of ten or 12 people regularly in
her spare time. These customers
have expressed great satisfaction
with her work, and it was partly
at their urging that she decided
to do this full time.
Mrs. Shields pointed out that
the dogs must be groomed re
gularly to keep them healthy and
clean. She said ttiat since poodles
don’t shed, they must be clipped
regularly to keep their hair from
knotting up and causing them a
great deal of discomfort. Hair
also grows in the dog’s ears,
Two Fire Alarms
The Clinton Fire Department
answered two calls during the
week. The first call was a false
alarm. On Tuesday, the depart
ment answered a call at 305
Sloan Street where a garage was
on fire. The blaze was extin-
an occurance that can lead to
serious infection. This hair must
be removed regularly to combat
this. There are various cuts that
can be put on poodles and Mrs.
Shields is qualified to do all of
them.
Although the salon will spe
cialize in poodles, Mrs. Shields
pointed out that the salon will
lie open to all breeds of dogs.
Each breed of dog is different
in the way that they should be
treated, and only a qualified
groomer of dogs can determine
when and in what form of sham
poo these dogs should tie bathed.
Mrs. Shields said that no matter
what the breed of dog, it should
be kept clean and well cut, both
for the comfort of the dog and
for the hygemc care of the family
that owns the dog.
Mrs. Shields, a native of Al
bemarle, N.C., plans to open tier
shop five days a week and will
tie closed on Wednesdays. Since it
takes approximately two and 1/2
hours to wash, comb out, fluff
dry, and shape a poodle and even
longer for some other breeds,
it is advisable to get an appoint
ment ahead of time, if possible.
Poodles especially should be kept
bathed, particularly around the
eyes and face because the mineral
guished before much damage was
done.
The Fire Department ex
pressed concern over the large
number of false alarms that have
been turned in during recent
weeks. A spokesman said charges
will be made against persons
turning in false alarms.

deposits from their tears, if left
on their face, can cause sores
and other harmful infection to

the dogs.
Most materials that will tie
used at the Clip and Snip Canine
Salon are imported and are of
the finest quality. The salon will
engage in no other activity ex
cept the grooming and good care
of the dogs. Mrs. Shields said,
“I want to assure everyone that
no sedative or any other artifi
cial means will be used to keep
the dog under control as 1 groom
them. Dogs seem to behave nat
urally for me. I can’t explain it,
but they do.”
Pnodle puppies will also lie a-
vailable at the Salon. Mrs. Shields
has ten poodles of her own, all
registered with the American
Kennel Club. She has entered one
of her dogs, “Star Bright,” in
the American Kennel Club Co
lumbia Show in the last several
years. The dog has won first,
second, third, and fourth place
ribbons in this competition. All
of the puppies that will be sold
are registeres with the American
Kennel Club.
