Presbyterian Youth
Retreat Slated At Beach
Approximately 50 high school
young people from Clinton and
Laurens will spend a week at
Garden City Beach in a “Re
treat* sponsored by the First
Presbyterian Church of Clinton.
The entire week will be given
to a varied program that will
include Bible study, small group
discussions concerning the Bible
and issues confronting youth in
our contemporary world. The
purpose of the Retreat is to help
the youths discover the disci
plines of growing discipleship in
confronting their problems and
those of the society in which we
live and how, as Christians, they
may best serve God in the world.
A full program of recreation
has been planned and will be
directed by Jimmy Bankhead and
Shell Dulla a recent graduate of
Presbyterian College.
Among the speakers and lead
ers will be the Rev. William T.
Iverson, a Presbyterian minister
who is completing his work on
his Ph.D. degree at Princeton
Seminary and is the founder and
executive director of Cross-
Counter, an extensive inner city
program among young people in
Newark, New Jersey.
Mrs. Grady Graham, a Bible
teacher from Jackson,
Mississippi, Miss “Sissy" War
wick of Columbia, and Mr. anjd
Mrs. A. L. Bixler also will ac
company the group.

Iverson Brought Church
To Newark Young People
The Rev. William Iverson, who
will speak at First Presbyterian
Church in Clinton Sunday morn
ing, brought the church to many
young people in Newark, N.J.
Iverson, a graduate of David
son College, established "the

Newark. As pastor of the First
Reformed Church of Newark, he
said he came to realize that if
he couldn’t get the young people
to church, he’d have to get the
church to the young people.
He established a luncheonette,
called “Bill’s Rough Riders”, ac-
cross the street from Newark’s
West Side High School.
An article in the June 13, 1966,
New York Times said, “It is po
sitioned and operated to lure
young people. When a youth walks
in and orders a cheeseburger,
he may wind up in a discussion

Leeke To Speak
At Kiwanis Meet
William D. Leeke, director of
the S. C. Department of Correc
tions, will be featured speaker
tonight, Thursday, at the Clinton
Kiwanis Club meeting.
The dinner meeting is to start
at 7 p.m. at Mary Musgrove Ho
tel.
A native of Pontotoc, Miss.,
Leeke is a graduate of Furman
University. He was appointed di
rector of the S. C. Department
of Corrections in May of 1968.
He served as deputy director for
five months after three years
as warden of the S. C. State
Penitentiary.
Leeke is married to the former
Mitzi Lewis of Mullins and they
have one child.

In the summer of 1968, Iverson
organized a program entitled
“New Work in Newark." With 100
volunteers from the “Campus
Crusade for Christ" organiza
tion, organized street parties,
clean-up campaigns, musical
concerts, another luncheonette,
discussion group retreats, a teen
breakfast, and a Tom Skinner
Crusade. The Crusade attracted
over 1,500 persons per night.
Through these programs, Iver
son and his group reached de
linquents, hippies, and many
others. Ten to 12 neighborhood
groups grew out of the summer
program.

LEGAL NOTICE OF HEARING
The South Carolina Public Ser
vice Commission has received a
petition from Southern Bell Tele
phone and Telegraph Company
requesting approval of proposed
changes in its Tariffs covering
charges for Intrastate Toll Tele
phone Service.
The petition states that the ef
fect of the proposed schedule of
toll rates is to change the pro
cedure for rounding all the charge
for additional minutes of toll
time used after the initial mini
mum period. If the charge for
an additional minute after the
initial period constitutes a frac
tion of a nickel, such charge un
der the present tariff is rounded
to the next lowest nickel. The
proposed change would be to
round off charges for additional
minutes to the next lowest penny.
This procedure would result in
the charge for additional minutes
being more precisely stated as a
correct percentage of the initial
period charge.
The petition states that, his
torically, the procedure of round
ing to the next lowest nickel
made for more convenient and
practicable bookkeeping and bill
ing, however, with computeriza
tion it is now no more difficult
to round the toll charge to the
next lowest penny than it is to
round to the next lowest nickel.
The petition further states that
the proposed schedule will pro
duce estimated additional gross
annual revenues of $657,000 for
the Company, which amount after
applicable income taxes will net
the Company approximately
$288,000. This amount will, to a
small degree, help to offset the
pressures of increased expenses,
taxes, and heavy construction ex
penditures at prevailing high cost
levels.
A public hearing in the above
entitled matter will be held in
the Commission’s office, 704
Owen Building, 1321 Lady Street,
Columbia, South Carolina, per
sons will be given an opportuni
ty to be heard.
