HERBERT SPAUGH Friday, July 4, is Independence Day. Many will observe it as purely part of a holiday week end. Too many will become casualties as a result. The great est danger is that our independ ence and liberty is rapidly be- combing a casualty to our in difference, complacency, and its opposite, violence. These national occasions which were originally- set apart as holy days of prayer and thanksgiving have become purely secular holidays. Con gress and our North Carolina Legislature has hastened the downward process by setting these great national days as the heart of a long weekend. Of course, there will be many more automobile casualties, many more new graves, but there will be less and less emphasis upon these virtues which made the United States great. July 4 ought to find us on our knees heeding the call to nation al righteousness issued by Al mighty God many years ago, and found in the Bible(IIChron. 7:14), “IF MY PEOPLE, WHICH ARE CALLED BY MY NAME, SHALL. HUMBLE THEMSELVES, AND PRAY, AND SEEK MY FACE, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS; THEN WILL I HEAR FROM HEAVEN, AND WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN', AND WILL HEAL THEIR LAND." The world picture is dis couraging. Crime, violence, war and bloodshed, rioting - at home and abroad. There is moral de cadence in society, which has become “permissive." Moral in tegrity is at a low ebb. The clock has moved up. The Bible consistently warns us about sin and weakness. It offers us the answer - Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only be gotten son, that whosoever be- lieveth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Both the Old and the New Testament proclaim the answer to man’s wickedness as love to God and our fellow man. It is high time that the fol lowers of God learn not only to practice what they preach, by personal witnessing, but sharing God’s love with our fellow man. The late, well-known psychia trist, Dr. Smily Blanton, put this in readable, everyday language in his little book, “Love Or Perish.” The situation in which we find ourselves, worldwide and at home, is due to our failure to understand and to practice true, sacrifical love. Actually, love is the most powerful weapon m the world - much more so than the most powerful atomic bombs. Men and women, by practicing the precepts of the command ments of the Bible, can push back the hands of the Doomsday clock. The matter is intensely personal. Do you demonstrate and practice love to God and your fellowman? That’s the crucial question. * + * THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE FOLLOWING FIRMS McGEES Drug Store Prescription Specialists • Cosmetics • Sick Room Supplies We Deliver — 833-0020 A-1 UPHOLSTERY S.
