DEAR SALLY: What do you
think of the chances of a happy
and compatible marriage between
two persons of totally different
tastes and hobbies? I’m a man
who is nuts about sports of all
kinds -- golfing, fishing, bowl
ing, auto-racing, baseball, foot
ball, and the like -- while my
fiancee cares not one little bit
about any of these things. She
loves art, literature, the theater,
and things like that--all of which
is for the birds so far as I am
concerned. So...how about this?
OHIO
DEAR OHIO: The essential in-
fredient of any happy, success
ful marriage is LOVE, not nec
essarily a similarity of hobbies
or interests. And along with love
there must be tolerance and con
sideration of both parties --an
effort by both husband and wife to
show at least an interest in the
other’s hobbies and enthusiasms.
DEAR SALLY: I’m a girlof23,
and sometime ago I began sharing
an apartment with a very good
girl friend. I thought at first this
was a good idea, in the interest
of companionship and economy--
but now I have big doubts. She
never helps with any of the house
cleaning or cooking- - hasn’t done
a lick of work either in the kitchen
or with the vacuum cleaner and
dustcloth. She even leaves her
clothes and shoes strewed all
over the place for me to pick
up and put away. How can I cope
with this situation? ROOMIE.
DEAR ROOMIE: Have a good,
heart-to-heart talk with your
roommate immediately. Tell her
you cannot possibly continue
under the present arrangement
unless she begins carrying her
share of the load. If this doesn’t
change her, move out, and find
another roommate.
DEAR SALLY: I'm a girl ofl7,
and still don't have a boy friend.
And I happen to know that the
reason for this is that I;m too
fat--about 30 to 40 pounds too
fat. My doctor recommended a
safe diet for me sometime ago,
and I managed to pare off about
ten pounds-but then found that I
couldn't withstand the temp
tations of all the delicious,
calorie-loaded foods I like so
much. Eve just about resigned
myself to a life of being fat and
being without a man. My Mom is
very much distressed over my
attitude and says I’ll eventually
be sorry if I stick to it. What
do ' you say? WEIGHTY
PROBLEM.
DEAR WEIGHTY: 1 say the
same as your Mom. Granted, a
reducing diet involves a lot of
work and willpower, but the re
sults are well worth it and you'll
be MUCH happier, too --
healthier, more attractive, and
with a greater amount of self-
respect.
DEAR SALLY: Just how does a
girl cope with the questions of
friends regarding a steady boy
friend with whom she recently
broke up? This boy and I dated
for almost two years, friends got
used to associating us with each
other, and now, ever since we
split up, I am constantly besieged
with questions about him. It’s
embarrassing, and I just can't
bring myself to explaining in de
tail the reasons for our breakup.

April amounted to $411 million,
further reports Mr. Clawson.

HOW
CAN I?

Q. How can I clean bronze or
naments?
A. These items should not be
washed. Dust carefully, and
follow with a wiping with a cloth
moistened in paraffin oil. Polish
with a chamois.
Q. What’s the best way to wash
out a chamois skin?
A. Wash carefully in warm
soapy water, don’t rinse the soap
out, and press the chamois care
fully on a flat surface to dry. Best
not to hang the chamois in the air
since this tends to make it hard
and dry.
Q. What is a good method of
brightening chromium?
A. By polishing with a dry
cloth containing baking soda.
Many other such tips on the care,
cleaning, and polishing of all
kinds of metals are included in
my house hold-hints book.
Q. How can I clean discolored
brick walls?
A. Dissolve an ounce of glue
in a gallon of hot water, add a
piece of alum about the size of an
egg, plus a half-pound of Venetian
red, and a pound of Spanish brown.
Work this solution on the brick
surface with a stiff brush, and
your bricks should emerge from
the treatment as bright as when
new.
Q. How can I remove spots
from laminated plastic?
A. Work areas covered with
this plastic sometimes are spot
ted by rust, grape juice, perma
nent ink, dyes, etc., and it’s best
not to use any abrasive cleaners,
since these could damage the
plastic. Instead, try using a sin
gle-step auto cleaner-polish for
the safe removal of these stains.
Q. How can I make an oak
stain?
A. By mixing a quart of boil
ed linseed oil, three gills of tur
pentine, six tablespoons of raw
umber, and six tablespoons of
whiting.
Q. What’s a good substitute
hair shampoo when I’ve run out
of the real thing?
A. Men’s shaving cream makes
a very good lather for the hair.
Q. What is a good treatment for
water-soaked leather shoes?
A. Stuff the shoes with news
paper or uncooked oatmeal, then
let them dry away from radiators,
stoves, or any kind of direct heat.
After they have dried, rub over
the leather with a raw potato-
half before polishing, and this
will help them to take on a good
gloss.
Q. How can I remedy deep,
unsightly scratches on mahogany
furniture?
A. One simple, often-effective
treatment consists of filling jh
the scratches with tincture Of
iodine, then applying furniture
polish or wax, andpolishingweU.
