Auto Parts Industry Shows Gains
BY BABSON’S REPORTS INC.
WELLESLEY HILLS, MASS.-
Aided by continued growth of the
replacement parts market and
the fast selling pace of new auto
mobiles, the auto parts industry
registered significant gains dur
ing 1968. Other factors which fav
orably influenced results in this
field were expanded government
safety programs, good foreign
demand, increased efficiencies ‘
from recent capital programs,
a better price structure, and a
sizable volume from nonautomo
tive products.
With many of these favorable
trends continuing into the current
year, most companies within the
industry have recorded further
gains during the first quarter of
1969.
MIXED SALES PICTURE
The near-term outlook, how
ever, indicates that the smart
gains of 1968 will not be matched
in the current year. Although
sales for the first half of 1969
will probably be ahead of the same
year-earlier period, the sales
pace may prove difficult to main
tain in the second half. The let
down will probably occur in the
original equipment market -- an
area sensitive to economic
changes.
Although new car sales con
tinue at a brisk pace, heavy
dealer stocks make automobile
production schedules vulnerable
to future cutbacks. At the same
time, anti-inflationary moves
taken by the Federal Reserve and
the new administration may soon
begin to show results. Conse
quently, some slippage in ship
ments of auto accessories to the
original eqtB£lff*dtiia£kBrs&e*vs
likely in the second half. To some
extent, however, this will be off
set by continued growth in the
replacement market and further
penetration of foreign markets.
Thus, full year results will pro
bably present a mixed sales pic
ture.
OUTLOOK FOR EARNINGS
Profits to a great extent will
resemble the trend of sales, but
full year results should show
some further gains over 1968 re
sults. However, rising costs and
continuation of the surtax will be
restraining factors and most
gains will be slim. Companies
heavily dependent on shipments to
the original equipment market
will be vulnerable during the se
cond half of 1969 and into the open
ing months of 1970. Profits of
these companies could be caught
in a squeeze of rising costs and
slower sales.
THE LONGER TERM
Looking ahead, the trend of both
sales and earnings, although sub
ject to fluctuation, should be up.
The original equipment market
wiU be influenced by the cycli- •
cal swings of new motor vehicle
production while the replacement
market faces a continuation of
steady growth.
In the years just ahead, auto
sales and production will be fav
orably influenced by rising dis
posable incomes, the trend to
ward multi-car families, a
steadily rising scrappage rate,
and anticipated growth in family
formations. Other influencing
factors will be style changes,
consumer tends regarding op
tional equipment, government
safety requirements, new techno
logy, and the degree of integra
tion by motor vehicle producers.
Demand for replacement parts
is primarily dependent upon the

Be An Alert Shopper

If you are like most people,
you do everything in a hurry and
shopping is no exception. A shop
ping trip would run into hours if
you compared each item you buy
with all the other choices that
could serve the same purpose.
However, by spending a little time
to make a careful decision on
one or two items you buy each
shopping trip, you could soon
build up a reserve of informa-

number of motor vehicles in use.
This segment of the parts busi
ness has been in a steady up
trend, and since 1944 regis
trations of privately owned ve
hicles in the U.S. have tripled.
The longer term outlook for this
market is further enhanced by
strte inspection requirements
and adoption of new products as
standard equipment.
RECOMMENDATION
Because over-all earnings are
expected to be only slightly high
er this year, we are currently
recommending purchase of only
two companies -- Kelsey-Hayes
and Echlin Mfg. Co. -- in the au
to parts industry. Kelsey-Hayes,
a leading producer of wheels,
hubs, and drums mostly for the
original equipment market, is a
major factor in disc brakes and
should benefit substantially from
the growth of this market. Ech
lin is a small but aggressive
manufacturer of parts for auto
motive system concentrating
primarily on the expanding re
placement market.
tion on which to base future de
cisions.
The best decision in one in
stance may not be the best in
another but maybe you would at
least learn prices of frequently
purchased items so you could re
cognize a change in price when
one occurs.
Be an alert shopper. Frequent
ly a small canned item will be
featured at a “special*price when
the larger canned item is really
the best buy. Check these small
specials against the larger item
in terms of weight and price --
you may be surprised.
For the budget minded, chicken
is an exceptional buy. Large sup
plies of fryers coupled with the
fact that these small and deli
cate chickens are very perish
able and must be moved quickly
through marketing channels
makes good prices on fryers easy
to predict. Watch for beef spe
cials for the best values. Pork
prices are fairly steady but in
creases are probable.
Most fresh vegetables are a-
vailable in good supply although
prices are a bit higher than last
year on most items.
The United Kingdom, with over
60 million spindles in 1917, was
the greatest textile-producing
country in the world. By 1960,
however, the number of spindles
had declined to less than 10 mil
lion.
