HOW CAN I?
BY ANNE ASHLEY
Q. Is there anything I can do
about a dish that is cracked, but
not actually broken?
A. You can often obliterate the
crack and strengthen the dish
just by boiling it in a pan of milk
for about 45 minutes or so.
Q. What can I do about a shrun
ken sweater?
A. Oftentimes it can be re
stored to shape by wetting it,
dropping it into a pillow case,
hanging the pillow case on the
line by the hem and letting water
drip into it. Do not wring the
sweater.
Q. How can I do a neat filling-
in job on deep, ugly-looking nail
holes in a plastered wall?

A. Mix up a little talcum pow
der or cornstarch with a few
drops of water, force this into
the holes, and smooth off around
the edges with your fingertips.
Q. What can I do, if anything,
about grease spots in fabrics that
have been allowed to become well
set?
A. You can try ‘fighting fire
with fire.” Rub fresh grease into
the spots, then wash immediate
ly.
Q. How can I renew suedo shoes
that have worn smooth?
A. A few light strokes with a
very fine grade of sandpaper will
bring back the roughened surface
of the suede. Other such tips on
the care of wearing apparel are
included in my household book.
Q. How can I remove printing
ink stains from fabrics?
A. By working lard, shortening,
or petroleum jelly into the stains,
then laundering with plenty of
soap and water. If not washable,
sponge with carbon tetrachloride.
Q. What can I do about cracks
in old wallpaper when I am apply
ing new paper over it?
A. Use maskingtape over these
cracks, which will prevent their
showing through the new paper or
cracking the new paper at these
same places.
Q. I’ve just installed one of
those silent electric mercury
wall switches in one of my rooms,
but it doesn’t work. Any sug
gestions?
A, It’s possible you’ve installed
it upside down-and this type of
switch doesn’t work in that po
sition.
Q. How can I keep flannels
soft when washing them?
A. By adding a teaspoon of pow
dered borax to each quart of rinse
water used.
Q. Any suggestions for better
pie crusts?
A. Pie crust, in which a half
teaspoon of baking powder has
been added to every cup of flour,
wiU be tastefully light and fluffy.
Q. How can I deal with a fresh
grease or oil stain on a fabric?
A. Sprinkle with talcum powdei
or cornstarch, rub this well into
the stain, let stand until the pow
der has absorbed the grease, then
brush off. Repeat as often as may
be necessary.

Your Telephone Manager
TELEVISION CAN RE EDUCATIONAL, as illus
trated by this episode in a comedy show a few
years ago. The star, playing the part of an ex
tremely wealthy man, gets irked when the man
ager of a plush hotel tells him he can’t have an
entire floor. So he walks to the
end of the counter, picks
phone, and calls
his business man
age. Within five
minutes the ho
tel manager gets
a call informing
him that the ho
tel has been sold
to h i s irritated
guest.
“How,” exclaims the manager, “could you possib
ly buy this hotel in five minutes?”
Chomping on a big cigar, the star smiles, “Direct
Distance Dialing.” Instructions on Direct Distance
Dialing are in your Telephone Directory but if they
are not clear please don’t hesitate to call our busi-
nes office and ask questions. Our number is 83S-
0100.
FOR ONE TRAVELER, a good habit resulted from
an unfortunate happening. While her parents
were away on vacation, there was a serious acci
dent at home. She couldn’t reach them, and they
had quite a shock when they arrived back home.
Since then she’s made it a point, any time she’s
traveling, to call home every evening. By waiting
for low night rates, she can enjoy a few minutes
of conversation that’s inexpensive, pleasant, and
reassuring.

Take the gopher,
for instance. He’s
developed such an
appetite for tele-
phone cable that
we’ve had to de
velop an armor

he can file his teeth without disrupting phone
service.
Then there was the bear who heard the hum of
nearby phone lines, thought they were bees, and
climbed the pole looking for honey.
And a telephone customer with a service problem
finally realized a hungry pet goose was pecking
the long “worm” that ran up the side of the house.
Our furred and feathered friends really keep us on

Sunshine taken in small doses
can be healthful, beautifying, and
most enjoyable. But an overdose
of sunlight can result in a blis
tering experience that will be
harmful to your skin and, there
fore, to your good looks. Even if
you tan easily, you do need good
protection when you’re on a
beach, in a boat, or swimming in
a lake.
What is a suntan? Tanning is a
coloration of the skin produced
by an action of the sun’s rays.
A sunburn is caused by the ul
traviolet rays of the sun when they
penetrate the outer layers of
the skin and act as an irritant
to the underneath layer.
If you want to acquire an at
tractive suntan and your skin can
“take it’, you should buy a pre
paration known as a “sun screen’
which filters out the burning rays
of the sun and allows just the
tanning rays to reach the skin.
There are some products made to
encourage a fast tan on the back,
arms, and legs. Others are made
to help you acquire a glowing tan
at a slower pace.
A dark-skinned brunette
usually takes easily to the sun.
People with very fair skin, gen
erally blondes and redheads, are
sun-sensitive. If you belong in
this group, select a product that
will allow only a restricted
amount of the sun’s rays to pene
trate. If you have lived inland

Dear Sally
BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: I am 24, and
have been dating a very wonder
ful and personable man of 27 for
some time. We get along fine,
except for one thing that bothers
me very much. On three dates
out of four he brings along the
10-year-old daughter of his wid
owed sister -- to dinner, to the
movies, to sporting events, and
everywhere we go. Don’t get me
wrong ... I like kids . . . but
how in the world is anything ser
ious or romantic ever going to
develop between this man and me
if we always have a 10-year-old
chaperon with us? Please advise
me. STYMIED:
DEAR STYMIED: Seems to me
that if this man were as eager
as you for something “serious’
to develop, he wouldn’t be bring
ing his 10-year-old niece along so
often on his dates with you. Why
don’t you mention something
about this to him? His answer
should tell you just where you
stand . . . and then you’ll know
what to do.
DEAR SALLY: What in the
world can a parent do about a boy
of 12 who has suddenly begun to
incorporate some of the foulest,
most obscene expressions in his
vocabulary? This is otherwise a
decent and intelligent boy with
whom we have never had up to now
the slightest bit of trouble. I’ve
tried to plead with him about this
habit, pointing out the fact that
he has certainly never heard this
kind of language at home - -
but he just shrugs me off, says
we’re old-fashioned and’notwith
it.’ DAD IN A DELEMMA.
DEAR DAD: A parent doesn’t
plead with a 12-year-old boy --
he TELLS him. And if in your
case this has no effect, resort
to the time-tested, strenous mea
sure of washing his mouth out
with soap . . .which is usually
very effective in cleaning out the
dirty words.
DEAR SALLY: We’ve been
married only six months, and I
am becoming more and more an
noyed over my husband’s habit of
listening in on our extension
phone to all my conversations
“You’re walking on my lat
est work!”

with my girl friends. He also
opens and reads any of my per
sonal mail he happens to get his
hands on. When I complained
about this, he said that marriage
means a complete sharing of
everything, with no secrets at all
between husband and wife. He has
agreed, however, to my writing
to you to see what you have to
say on the subject. VEXED.
DEAR VEXED: Your husband’s
sense of ethics is in sad need
of adjustment. Granted, marriage
is a sharing -- but what he’s
been doing is NOT sharing--
it’s SPYING! Good, happy, solid
marriages are built on confidence
and trust, and where those in
gredients are lacking there is
misery for both persons.
DEAR SALLY: Myplansformy
big, formal, church wedding early
next month included a maid-of-
honor and four bridesmaids. Now
a big monkey wrench has been
thrown into these plans. One of my
bridesmaids has asked to be ex
cused from taking an active part
in the wedding because of the sud
den death of her mother. Do you
think it would be all right for
me to ask another friend to take
her place? BRIDE.
DEAR BRIDE: I’d hesitate to do
this for fear of leading to em
barrassment of hurt feelings on
the part of the “ substitute ’ for not
having been asked in the first
place. Surely you can have just as
pretty a wedding with three
bridesmaids as with four.

yourself at the seashore, double
your guard and take to the sun
with caution. And if your skin is
disturbed, breaks out readily, of
if you are suffering from acne,
check with your doctor about how
much sun you can take and just
what kind of protection you need.
If you must be in the sun but
don’t want a tan, or if your skin
is too sensitive, buy a product
that contains a ‘sun block”. This
type of preparation will screen
out the burning rays and also act
as a stop sign to the tanning
rays. It will protect you from suf
fering.
READ THE LABEL-Never de
pend just on a baby oil or cream,
or any other type of oil which
is not made specifically for pro
tection from the sun, because they
don’t have any sun-screening
agents. All you’re apt to get is
frying, buring and no tan! When
you set out to buy a sun lotion,
liquid, spray, foam, or cream-in-
a tube preparation, take time to
read the label before you buy it.
The form of the product you
buy depends not only on your
needs, but on your taste as well.
Some people, especially those with
dry skin, like the feel of an oily
product. Others who cannot stand
oil on their skin, like anonsticky
liquid that is easily absorbed into
the skin or an easy-to-apply
cream in a tulie. Still others
are devotees of the gelee (jelly-
like substance) or the cooling
feel of a spray-on liquidor foam.
If you have dry skin, use a
product that contains a moist
urizer. There are special pro
ducts made for nose protection;
soothing, moisturizing lippom-
ades are also available.
Packaging, too, plays its role
in your ultimate choice of a sun
time product. Do you like to see
the product at a glance in a clear
glass container? Or do you pre
fer the unbreakable, easy-to-tote
plastic squeeze bottles? Do you
have fun pushing an aerosol con
tainer? Or do you choose to carry
a lightweight tube of cream that
takes so little space in your kit?
DON’T ENCOURAGE FUTURE
WRINKLES - Spending too many
hours in the sun, over a numt»er
of years, is apt to result in ex
cessively dry, wrinkled skin that
has a dark, leathery look. This
overexposure to the sun drains
the skin of natural moisture and
promotes premature wrinkling
and sagging. Not only is an over
abundance of sun aging to the skin,
but some doctors now feel it may
result in skin cancer. Do your
tanning sensibly. Stay away from
the beach or water between the
hours of ten a.m. and two p.m.
because that’s when the experts
believe the sun is most potent.
Pack a beach bag with your sun
preparation, facial tissues, sun
glasses, lip pomade, face powder,
and lipstick. The latter two cos
metics and make-up foundation
are good protection against the
sun. Wear a gay, widebrimmed
straw hat. And if with all this
protection you stUl born, use a
soothing cream or lotion made
for just such an emergency.
An impartial observer is
the fellow who sees your
side of the argument.
And don’t think you’re safe from
a burn on a cloudy day; you won’t
tan but you can blister.
