Troupe and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Warren and Sharon of Batesburg were last weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Slneath. Mr. Candy Lawson and Wendy of Greenville is spending two weeks in Joanna with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith and other rela tives while her husband, Delmar Lawson of the National Guard is at Fort Gordon. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tinsley and family attended the funeral of Mrs. Tinsley’s brother, Hubert Smith in Leesville on Friday. A- mong the others to attend were Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Dunlap and Mrs. Agnes Bowers. Dr. and Mrs. Paul Peddicord, and daughters, Sharon and Su san of Hattisburg, Miss., has spent a weeks vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. We- hunt. On Friday they visited Mr. and Mrs. Ross Lathrop in Aiken. The Peddicords returned to Mississippi on Saturday. Connell who is working in Win ston Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Lou Kitchens, Joey and Tony of Newberry spent last Sunday with Mrs. Minnie Burnett and other relatives. Kevin Burnett returned with them to stay a few weeks. Recently Mrs. Minnie Burnett joined Mrs. Willie Mae Spires and Chip of Clinton and visited Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Spires in At lanta. On Sunday Mrs. W. J. Hogan and Gene visited Mr. and Mrs. James Bowman in Hickory, N.C. and Fred Buff in Salisbury, N.C. JOANNA WOMAN’S CLUB On Thursday (today) June 5, the Woman’s Club will hold its regular monthly meeting. A high light at the meeting will be the covered dish supper. Each mem ber is urged to attend. BIRTHDAY, ANNIVERSARIES SARA ANNE SADLER Miss Sadler Graduates Miss Sara Anne Sadler ofClin- ton was among the 274 students who received degrees May 31 in commencement exercises at Trinity College in Washington, D. C. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus E. Sadler of 205 Calvert Ave., she majored in political science and received the Bachelor of Arts degree. Danny and Tony Humphries of Greenwood spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hum phries. On Saturday afternoon the children joined Mrs. Julia Mae Yorborough and son Rusty, and Randall Arrowood and Marty Wicker in an outing on Lake Mur ray near Macedonia Church. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Miller and daughter, Sonya Lou of Greenville visited Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Mill er over the weekend. They were here also to visit Mrs. Millers father, Charlie Hollis, who is a patient at Bailey Memorial Hos pital. Mrs. Lyda Connell and Scott has returned to Joanna after spending several months with Mr. Kayran Cox Wins Awards Kayran L. Cox of Clinton, a freshman at Columbia, College, won awards for excellence in the mathematics and physical science departments at the annual Awards Day Program on May 29. These awards are given to stu dents who attain the highest aca demic average in the various de partments of the college. Miss Cox was also inducted into the Order Of The Purple Seal, a selection based on honary scho lastic standing. On May 30, Ruth Seawright celebrated her birthday. On May 31, Tony Humphries observed a birthday. Today June 5th, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Puckett observes a wedding anniversary. Melinda Hendrix, Keith Case and Virginia Hazel has a birth day on June 6. On June 7, Roy Sexton, and Sue Jenkins, celebrates a birth day and Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Mur- rah Sr., will observe a wedding anniversary. Birthday greetings go to Tom my Jenkins, John Nabors, Janet Davenport, and Jerry Arrowood on June 8. Also on the same day Mr. and Mrs. Richard Darden will observe a wedding anniversary. Happy birthday on June 9th to Betty JeanSanford, Evie Johnson, and A Hie Mae Puckett. Emory Moore and Eugenia Johnson wiU celebrate a birthday on J une 10. Warren Receives Duke Degree Lawrence Newton Warren Jr. of Clinton received a Bachelor of Arts degree Monday from Duke University. The son of Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Warren of 501 Cedar St., he was one of more than 1,500 students who received degrees in the uni versity’s 117th commencement exercises. Angler Biddle Duke, a member of the university’s founding family and now U.S. ambassador to Denmark, presented the com mencement address in Duke Indoor Stadium. Five Represent County At Water Safety School Misses Eileen Emily Moore and Jane Dail Roper of Laurens, and Misses Rhonda Mills and Me lissa B. Turner and also Thomas A. Vance of Clinton, will leave on June 4th for Camp Blue Star, Hendersonville, N.C., where they wiU be enrolled in the Water Safety Major section. They will represent the Laurens County Red Cross Chapter at the ten- day National Aquatic School spon sored by the American Red Cross. Their expenses will be paid by the local chapter funds. On completion of the intensive training, these students will be certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructors, qualified to teach classes in swimming and life saving in the county, Mr. James E. Barton, chairman of the chap ter Safety Services Committee, said. “We realize that there are some 6,500 drowinings in the na tion every year,” he said, “and two-thirds of this number were accident victims who had no in tention of going into the water. To prevent these tragedies from happening in Laurens County, our Chapter is financing this train ing. As a result, youngsters who enroll in the swimming and life saving courses to be offered later in the summer by the water safety graduates may be assured of learning how to take care of them selves in the water.” Persons attending the aquatic school will be trained in such skills as swimming, lifesaving, water safety practices, and first aid. All courses will be under the direction of Red Cross first aid and water safety leaders and other specialists in these disciplines from various schools, colleges, and safety organiza tions. * * * Bookmobile To Begin Summer Schedule The Laurens County Book mobile will begin its summer schedule on June 9. This service provides reading material for in terested participants throughout the summer. Mac Adair, 100 Musgrove St., Clinton, was graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, in a colorful ceremony. He received his di ploma and a congratulatory hand shake from Gen. Hugh P. Harris, president of the military college. During his career as a cadet, Adair held the rank of sergeant in his junior year. He served as conductor of the Bulldog Combo and as major of the Bagpipers. He was selected to represent The Citadel on the 1966 South Caro lina All State College Band in which he played the drums. On graduating from The Citadel, he was commissioned a second lieu tenant in the U. S. Air Force. He was awarded a B.
