HERBERT SPAUGH The greatest killer nf all time is the automobile, and its chief assistant is beverage alcohol. This is not a theory, but a fact supported by studies of national and reputable organizations. Tlie National Department of Trans portation released recently a study concluding that alcohol is the largest single factor in traffic deaths. It said the most serious problem is heavy drink ing, predominantly by men. Dri vers with extremely large a- mounts of alcohol in their blood, the report said, account for 50 to 55 per cent of all single-ve hicle accidents killing ilrivers. It was also revealed that drink ing figures in at least 800,000 traffic accidents in the United States each year, and accidents involving young people frequently also involve “hazardous amounts of alcohol.” Dem'>nstrations, peaceful and violent, all over the world a- gainst the war m Vietnam are in creasing. Yet the automobile has killed more people than all the wars in which the United States lias engaged, including V letnam. If we are logical, why don’t we protest against the automobile 0 The chief villian in the automo bile casualty rate is alcohol, yet instead of protest against its use there is organized effort to make if more available. Its use in the past two generations has increas ed tremendously until it is com monplace amongst youth today. A tremendous campaign a- gainst the use of cigarettes is having a profound effect upon people today. North Carolina is alarmed by this and what it can do to the state’s economy. Yet there is no record of cigarettes incapacitating automobile dri vers, breaking up homes, bring ing suffering to countless inno cent victims. The smoker hurts himself, while the drinker hurts himself and others. Let’s recognize Public Enemy No. 1 as beverage alcohol which lias little if any constructive use. The alcohol problem in the United States liecame sobadprmr to World War I that we tried to outlaw it by the Prohibition Act. And remember, we didn’t have the automobile in general use then. The Volstead Prohibition Act be came increasingly unpopular. We allowed our education program to lapse, and now we are back where we were in 1917, with the prob lem compounded by the automo bile. Let’s do some honest think ing and praying about this. One day the pendulum will l>egin to swing back, and I hope to live to see it.
