i H.fri CHRONICLHJ, Clinton, S. C., Mny 29, 1969— Family Finance Plans National Info System TRASH—Another trash dump. Shown above Is one of the literally hundreds of trash piles where people have no place to throw their trash. This one is located in the Maddens community and as the sign shows warns people that they are violating the law but they continue to pile the trash by the newly constructed state highway. Citizens Seek Rural Trash Dump System BY M. L. OUTZ County Agent Last week a group of interest ed citizens of Mountville, Cross Hill, and Waterloo held a meet ing with supervisor Furman Thomason concerning establish ing trash dumps in those com munities and in other communi ties around Laurens County. A Catawba Company representative offered land to establish a dump in the Mountville area. I am sure other companies will do the same provided the county will super vise these dumps. This group de cided that these dumps simply had to be established in the coun ty so that people would have a place to dump their trash rather than on the shoulders of the high way. Mr. Thomason pledged his cooperation and said that he saw the need for having our county cleaned up, but he brought out that there had to be means provided to do this type of work and if the people wanted this service they would have to provide this means. I am sure that the rural peo ple of nOTreWT' 7 '' iTITTf? and can see that some type of organized effort must be made to provide means for people to dump their trash. There are so many people in the county now who have only an acre or two of land and do not have any place to dump their rubbish. These families, to gether with those who simply do not care, are causing much of the problems. It was summed up that each family in the county would have several hundred pounds of trash each year to dispose of. In visiting over the county and talking this problem over with our people it is felt too that law enforcement agencys should be more interested in this problem. The law simply states and I quote, “It shall be unlawful for any person without written per mission to dump or leave trash, refuse or garbage on any pro perty belonging to another or on or along any public highway, ocean or river front, river, har bor or beach in this State.” A committee from those of Mountville and surrounding area are meeting with the county de legation in the very near future to see if there can be some thing worked out to at least make a start at solving this problem. Recently I had the pleasure of visiting some of our 4-H Club members with Joe Cely, Assist ant County Agent. We started with Red and Steve Fridy, who have a beef calf project. In fact, all of those we visited have purchased calves this year for their 4-H project. Gray Curry of Gray Court, has two Angus calves that he is grooming for showing this fall. From Gray’s we went to Dan Osborne’s of the Youngs Com munity. He also has an Angus calf together with the several horses tl^at he is taking care of. From there we went over to visit with Billy Patterson and Eddie Simp son, who have registered here- fords calves for their projects. Another young man who is in the Dairy Club that recently pur chased a dairy calf is Maxie Pat terson. He has a registered Hol stein for his project. It is certainly impressive to visit with these young people and to see their interest and en- thusiam in 4-H work. I do not be lieve that there is anything that is more important in our work that we do than that of the 4-H work. I want to congratulate all these boys on their interest and the fine work that they are doing.
