1 * * * Cross Shares Town Problems BY ERNE SEGARS CROSS HILL - Cross Hill Is a small town but it shares prob lems with large cities—prob lems of roads, fire prevention, water and garbage disposal. The Cross Hill Town Council has projects under way or in the planning stages related to all of the above problems. ROADS The State Highway Department has under construction several miles of secondary roads within the town limits of Cross Hill. The cost for improving these roads is approximately$350,000. The Town Council, assisted by the Laurens County Legislative Delegation, was instrumental in obtaining the badly needed road work. The improvements involve widening and resurfacing exist ing roads. FIRE PREVENTION A problem that has constant ly plagued Cross Hill for the last several years is the prob lem of fire prevention. Within recent years, fire has claimed a number of homes, causing some heavy losses by owners. At the present time, the town’s only piece of fire-fight ing equipment is one used and out-of-date truck. This truck has failed to operate in at least one emergency situation, causing disastrous results. Metropolitan Life’s invest ments in South Carolina contri buted significantly to the demands for capital to finance industrial expansion and research, to help the needs of large and small busi nesses, and to spur the trend to wards home ownership, Jeffcoat ( inte^Q^Forexam^le, more m was mveSted corporate securities of com panies doing business in South Carolina, and Metropolitan Life’s mortgage loans in the state amounted to $146 million. The company’s holdings of U.S. Government bonds apportioned to the state on the basis of popu lation amount to $10 million. Other Metropolitan Life assets attributable to South Carolina a- mounted to $17 million. Total company assets--held for the protection of policy- holders and in order to pay fu ture benefits -- reached a new high of $25,840,000,000 at year end, a gain of $1,240,000,000 for the year. The net return on Me tropolitan Life’s investment portfolio was 5.05 percent. Find Out About Federal Health Plan Every month many persons in] the Clinton area sign up late for their Medicare benefits, J. E. Gunter, social security field re presentative, said today. Noting that May has been pro claimed Senior Citixens Month by I the President, Mr. Gunter urged Clinton area residents who are approaching age 65 to celebrate by finding out as much as they can about the Federal health plan for older Americans. Contact the social security representative in | Clinton at the Employment Of fice on Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. A person should sign up for medical insurance two or three months before he reaches 65, if he wishes coverage of doctor bills to begin in the month he reaches 65. If he waits until la ter, his medical insurance may not begin until one to three months after he signs if), and if he waits more than three months after he reaches 65, he will not have another chance to sign if) tor a long time — perhaps as much as a year. For a person who is a social security beneficiary, the basic hospital insurance protection be gins automatically with the month of the 65th birthday. One who is not receiving benefits should check with the social security of fice two or three months before his 65th birthday about his eli gibility. WATER Cross Hill Town Council also is considering plans to purchase a reserve water tank. This tank could be used in firefighting as well as serving in a reserve ca pacity. Garbage Disposal For several years, Cross Hill has been plagued with garbage disposal problems. The town now is associated with the Lake Greenwood Garbage Disposal Service, a privately operated business which provides home garbage collection service on a weekly basis. Robert T. Hollingsworth is mayor of Cross Hill. TownCoun- cilmen are Fred Williams, Wil liam Davis, Red Edmunds and R. B. Segars. 'Compensation', Tension' Explained • Compensation* and “pension* are two important words for vet erans and their dependents. They are often used inter changeably by the public, but, ac cording to Howard H. Watkins, County Service Officer, Laurens their meanings are vastly dif ferent. - Mr. Watkins explained that “compensation* is payment that VA makes because of a disabili ty suffered in military service. The payment may go to a veter an who has been disabled by an injury or a disease that origi nated or was aggravated while he was in active service. In case of death for such a service-connected disability, compensation payments go to the veteran’^; survivors. The financial condition of the recipient is not taken into con sideration in cases of compensa tion payment. “Pension, on the other hand,’ Watkins said, “is paid to war time veterans or their depend ents on a basis of need for dis abilities or death to cases not connected with military service. The income of the recipient has a direct bearing on the amount of pension.” Mr. Watkins said that informa tion on these and other benefits is available by mail, phone, or personal inquiry at any local VA office.
