KENNEDY HELICOPTER—A heh-
copter which once was used by Presi
dent John F. Kennedy made a stop
in Clinton last week. The helicopter
has been converted and was used to
fly Brig. Gen. George Beatty, Jr.,
to Presbyterian College for ROTC
awards ceremonies. Brig. Gen.
Beatty flew to Clinton from Hunter
Army Air Field in Savannah, Ga.
The Huey UHIH, which landed on the

For Blue Key
Eight rising seniors at Pres
byterian College have been tapped
for membership in Blue Key lead
ership fraternity and have se
lected Duncan McFayden of Rae-
ford, N. C., as the club’s new
president for the coming year.
Others chosen for the honor
organization are: L. Ferdinand
Jourdan and John B. Taylor, both
of Chester; Douglas Bowles ofSt
Stephen; William A. Bryant Jr.,
of Quincy, Fla.; John Akers of Or
mond Beach, Fla.; RobertE. Hall
of Atlanta; and Robert Johnston
of Columbus, Ga.
Bryant was elected to serve
as Blue Key’s new vice-presi
dent; and Akers, as secretary-
treasurer.
Cobb Named
Outstanding
Senior At PC
The award as Presbyterian
College’s "outstanding senior*of
1969 will go to Hart Cobb of De
catur, Ga., at commencement ex
ercises on May 18, it was an
nounced today.
He was chosen by a vote of
the senior class and the faculty
for the award given to “that mem
ber of the graduating class who,
by his conduct and character,
physical fitness and mental sta
bility, most nearly approximates
the institution’s ideals.* It is
presented annually by the Pres
byterian College Alumni Asso
ciation.
Cobb has been an active stu
dent leader as president of Blue
Key leadership fraternity, pre
sident of his fraternity and a
member of the tennis team.

Church Of God
Rev. James W. Wiley is the
newly appointed pastor of the
Elizabeth Street Church of God.
Rev. Wiley comes to Clinton
from Newberry where he pas-
tored the College Street Church
of God. He has served other pas
torates in the state, coming to
South Carolina in ’53.
Rev. Wiley attended Lee Col
lege of Cleveland, Tennessee and
South Eastern Louisiana State
College of Hammond, Louisiana,
after which he served as pastor
and evangelist before coming to
the state of South Carolina.
Rev. Wiley was licensed by his
church in 1947 and ordained in '55.
He is married to the former
Miss Thelma Harris of Ander
son and they have two daughters,
Mrs. Ronald Kidd of Clemson,
who is employed as a teacher
in Pickens County and Mrs.
Harold Maness of Laurens who is
employed in the office of Whit
ten Village.
Lawson Elected
As Director Of
Furniture Assn.
PAWLEYS ISLAND - At the
57th Annual Convention-Mem
bership Meeting of the Southern
Retail Furniture Association
Claude M. Lawson, President of
the Lawson Furniture Co., Joanna
was elected to the Board of Di
rectors of the one-thousand
member group. The association,
founded in 1912 is the oldest re
tail furniture association in the
United States. The meeting held
at the Litchfield Inn attracted
members from Virginia, North
and South Carolina.
Mr. Lawson will serve on the
association’s Meeting Arrange
ment Committee during the
forthcoming year. He was elect
ed to the Board because of his
interests in the problems facing
the industry -- as well as the
active role he has played in the
past for the good of the furni
ture retailer generally.
Ingram Recital
Set At Newberry
James W. Ingram Jr., a stu
dent of Professor Darr Wise of
Newberry College, will present
his piano recital on Thursday
evening, May 8, at 8 o’clock in
the A. G. D. Wiles Chapel on
the Newberry College campus.
The event is, in part, meeting the
requirement for the Bachelor of
Arts with a Music Major.
The public is invited.

gular organist-choirmaster ofSt.
John’s Lutheran Chruch of Clin
ton since October, 1967.

Marker Moved
City Street Department work
ers uncovered an old granite
marker at the edge of West Caro
lina Ave. this week.
The marker reads “George
Washington, 1732 - 1932.’* It is
about two feet long, 10 inches
wide and 12 inches deep. Street
Dept Supt. Eddie McGee had the
marker moved to the center of
town marker between the railroad
tracks.
Local historian James P. Sloan
said a celebration was held in
Clinton in 1932 on the occasion
of the 200th anniversary of
George Washington’s birthday.
The marker has been worn on
one side where it has been run
over by traffic.
Prep Chemistry
Students Honored
More than 100 high school
chemistry teachers and their se
lected students from through
out South Carolina were guests
of Presbyterian College for a
special chemistry dinner and
program Friday night.
They were entertained with
dinner in Greenville Hall, fol
lowed by a program in Rich
ardson Science Hall. The main
speaker was Dr. K. Nolqn Car
ter, chemistry department chair
man. This topic is “Fluor-
escense, Phosphorescence and
Chemiluminescence. ’
