BY ANNE ASHLEY Q. What causes my iron to stick to the clothing as I press it? A. Either too much starch, clothes not properly rinsed, or dirt on the bottom of your iron can cause this. If it’s the bottom of your iron that’s at fault, rub it with a damp cloth when cool. Polish with a dry cloth. For stubborn cases, use silver polish, or run the iron over a little table salt spread on waxed paper. In the case of rayons and other synthetic fabrics, too hot an Iron will cause sticking. Q. How can I relieve tired and aching feet? A. Boric acid in the foot bath will not only relieve tired, per spiring feet, but will also remove any unpleasant odor. Q. What have you to say a- bout the idea of soaking clothes before laundering them? A. Don’t soak them so long that the dirt is distributed through the fabrics. If soaking overnight, be sure the sudsy water is cold, or your clothes will take on a poor color. Q. How can I prevent window glass from streaking as I wash it? A. Adding a little vinegar to your wash water will avoid streaking, and will also make the glass sparkle. Q. How can a woodcarving hobbyist harden the wood that has been cut out and sculptured into ttje de^ed, ’’“’’A. By boiling -the p eces in pure olive oil for eight to ten minutes. Many other such‘hobby hints* are contained in my house hold hints book. Q. How can I prevent Chinese and Indian matting rugs, as well as bamboo curtains and furni ture, from yellowing? A. It seems every beautiful girl I run across is so much infatuated with her own good looks and spends so much time with her makeup that she has ne glected altogether developing any intelligence. In other words, I am about fed up with all the brain less beauties, and ready to settle for a girl who, although short on looks, is long on good sense. How do I go about finding her? MARVIN. DEAR MARVIN: By looking in the same places where you’ve been running across the beau ties. . .and ‘Plain Jane" is al ways easy to find, too. . .she’s usually in the majority. On the other hand, I think your judg ment is a little warped. There DO happen to be many gorgeous girls who also have high IQ’s ---and conversely, many girls lacking in beauty can also be lacking in the brain department. DEAR SALLY: Just what is wrong with a cold fish who treats a girl he dates regularly like a sister? I know I am consider ed more than passably attrac tive, but this fellow hasn’t even made the slightest move to kiss me even after a dozen dates! I’m sure he likes me a lot and I know I like him -- but this lack of any romantic emotions on his part bothers me no end. I need advice. . .badly! UN TOUCHED. DEAR UNTOUCHED: It isn’t you who needs advice. . .it’s your cold fish! There definitely is something wrong with a fellow who doesn’t at least attempt to kiss an attractive girl. . .much, MUCH earlier than his twelfth date with her. I think maybe you should tell him goodbye. DEAR SALLY: I’m a young woman considering investing in a wig. Have you any comments oo this? J.L, DEAR J. L: Wigs are a very popular beauty aid these days, and certainly help a girl to look her very best on special occa sions. A wig is a boon when you are unable to wash your hair for some reason just before a big date. . .also, if you have very fine hair whose styling suffers in damp weather. . .or if you have a problem with thinning hair. DEAR SALLY: I’m a girl of 18, work as a clerk in the cosme tics department of a super drug store, and like it very much-- except for one very annoying thing. The manager of one of the other departments, an old mar ried man of at least 40, con tinually bothers me by reeling off risque stories. I don’t know how he got the idea that I like to listen to such trash--because I don’t. I have wonderful parents who taught me high principles, and I’ve always tried to live up to these principles. What I would appreciate your telling me is a good, stiff answer I might give this disgusting man the next time he sidles up to my counter with that leer on his face and the in evitable question, “Have you heard the one about, etc.?“COR NERED. DEAR CORNERED: Tell him, “No, but maybe my father has. I’ll have him drop in and you can check with him.* This SHOULD muzzle him--but if it doesn’t take the matter up with the manager of the store. HERBERT SPAUGH “Prayers to Pray Wherever Yoir Xre" by Jeanette Struchen (Lippincott $2.50) is a new and delightful little book for your desk or bedside table. The left hand page contains a choice bit of ChrisHm philosophy, while on the right page is a warm, simple, everyday prayer designed to help in everyday living. The author’s introduction sets the tone of the book: “Most of us live life on a grid dle. We eat on the run, sleep during commercials, and stand on our heads trying to find out what it’s all about. The faster we go, the more we need a few unshak- ables in religious faith. They need to be simple, honest, and work able.’ The first prayer sets the pace of this prayer book. “God, help me pray it like it is. In the midst of explosion peo ple cry, scream, and pray with out stalling for proper words or acceptable posture. “The world is exploding, Lord, with change and crises, with hate and cruelty, with pain and fear, with money and prejudice, with potential and obligation. But man’s hide is toughened against change and numb to vicarious pain. “Don’t embalm him as he is, Lord. Show him how to crack the escape hatch through prayer. Amen.', I particularly like the page on love: “Love washes the strain out of life. Love makes us new and whole. Love compels faith. Love lifts faith. Love supports faith. Love becomes energy for good. Love is unselfish. Love jumps barriers of skin color. Love ig nores zones of silence between nations. Love is eager. Love is patient. Love penetrates walls that split man from his brother. Love is not egotistical. Love tears prejudice into shreds and absorbs selfishness into streams of purpose.” The author, Mrs. Jeanette Struchen, is well-known throughout the Methodist Church and is an ordained elder. She has frequently conducted re treats and has spoken at church conferences of many denomina tions. This book is recommended to our readers.
