Widening North Main Street
and Augusta Road in Greenville
and paving shoulders on U.S. 276
were among major projects for
which funds were approved
Thursday by the State
Commission at its regular
monthly meeting.
Work on U.S. 276 is classed
as a betterment project which in
volves asphaltic concrete sur
facing and construction of paved
shoulders in Greenville and Lau
rens counties. The 32-mile im
provement extends from S. C.
Route 417 in Mauldin easterly to
Interstate Route 25 near Clinton.
The control-of-access facility
has been carrying increasing vol
umes of traffic since its con
struction in 1960. The addition of
paved shoulders will greatly en
hance its safety characteristics
and bring it more into line with
Interstate Highway System stan
dards.
The North Main Street project
calls for widening to five lanes
between College Street and Stone
Avenue, a distance of 0.6 mile.
Widening between College Street
and Park Avenue will be done
on the east side of the street,
then will shift to the west side
between Park Avenue and Stone
Avenue.
Augusta Road (U.S. 25) will be
widened to four lanes between
Parkins Mill Road and S. C. 291.
The project is a half-mile long.

'My Fair Lady'
CHS Seniors, Music
Dept. Present Musical
The music department and sen
ior class of Clinton High School
will present ‘My Fair Lady," a
musical play in two acts, on May
8, 9, and 10, at the high school
auditorium.
The curtain rises each night at
8 o’clock. Tickets for the per
formances are $1.50, adults; $1
students.
The musical is based on George
Bernard Shaw’s “Pygalion."
Composers Alan Jay Lerner and
Frederick Loewe make Shaw’s
story of a “low-life" Cinderella
who becomes a “lady” come to
life with such songs as “Wouldn’t
It Be Loverly", “I Could Have
Danced All Night," ‘With a Little
Bit of Luck", “On the Street
■Vhere You Live", “Get Me to the
Church on Time", and “I’ve
Grown Accustomed to Her
Face."
The setting of the play is
fashionable London in 1912. The
play opens on the street scene at
the hour of the theater rush.
Freddy Eynsford-Hill, wealthy,
handsome, and sincere, acci
dently bumps into Eliza D(X>little,
the beautiful but diry flower girl,
and sends her sprawling with her
flowers. Her loud protests at
this introduce us to the cockney
dialect that Professor Henry Hig
gins, the dedicated phonetician,
finds so intriguing. Higgins de
clares to his friend, Colonel
Pickering, that he can make a
lady of this gutter-snipe with
in six months. Eliza is taken in
to Higgins’ home and thereafter
much drilling with vowel sounds
md instruction as to how a lady
should act, Eliza is ready for her
first test in society at the As
cot Races. Young Freddy Hill
sees her there and immediately
falls in love with her. Eliza’s
big test, however, comes at the
Embassy Ball, an affair glitter
ing with royalty and high socie
ty. Stunningly dressed, Eliza cap
tures the eyes as well as the
hearts of everyone there.
To Higgins, Eliza is nothing
more than a guinea pig, and he
completely forgets that she is a
human being. Eliza becomes hurt
and runs away. Discovering that
she is gone, Higgins must face
up to the inescapable fact: he
loves her.
