Miss Lee
Miss Henri Etta Lee, 96,
daughter of the first president
of Clinton College, died Sunday
morning at Mountain View Nurs
ing Home in Spartanburg.
Her father, the late William
States Lee, was the first presi
dent of Clinton College which la
ter became Presbyterian Col
lege.
Miss Lee taught at Thornwell
School and also in North Caro
lina Schools. She was an artist
and worked in the Art Depart
ment at Jacobs & Co. when J.
Ferdinand Jacobs Sr. was presi
dent of the company.
She was an aunt of Mrs. Rob
ert C. McLees and Mrs. Homer
L. Todd of Clinton.
Graveside services were con
ducted Monday in the First Pres
byterian Church Cemetery in
Clinton.

CLINTON - Dewey Leslie Aus
tin, 67, of Rt. 1, Clinton, Green
wood Highway died early Thurs
day morning in a local hospi
tal.
He was a lifelong resident of
Laurens County, a son of the late
J. Wesley and Victoria Tucker
Austin. He was a retired carpen
ter of Lydia Mills and a mem
ber of Lydia Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Venie Smart Austin; two daugh
ters, Mrs. R. Relma (Erline)
Mitchum of Clinton and Mrs.
Elmer (Brenda) Jenkins of Whit
mire; two sons, Harold L. Aus
tin of Clinton and Bruce D. Aus
tin of the U.S. Navy, Norfolk,
Va.; a sister, Mrs. Pauline Law-
son of Fountain Inn; and five
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lydia
Baptist Church. Burial was in
Pine lawn Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Wesley
Mrs. Mary Kinard Wesley, 70,
wife of Allen Wesley died Sat
urday in a local hospital.
She was a member of Mt. Zion
AME Church, Joanna, and the Wo
men’s Aid Society.
Surviving also are two daugh
ters, Mrs. Nancy Cromer of Jo
anna and Mrs. Maybell Jackson
of Clinton, four sons, Charlie,
William, Lawson and George
Wesley of Clinton; 18 grandchild
ren and eight great-grandchild
ren.
Funeral services were con
ducted Wednesday at Mt. Zion
AME Church.
Burial was in the church ceme
tery.

ISLE OF PALMS - Funeral
services were held Saturday for
Leo J. Dawson, 79, father of Dr.
Robert H. Dawson of Clinton.
Mr. Dawson resided at 801
Palm Ave., Isle of Palms. Fun
eral services were conducted at
the Stella-Marris Catholic
Church on Sullivan’s Island.
Other surviviors include his
wife, two other sons, two daugh
ters, 11 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.

VALLEY FALLS-Thomas Lee
Stone, 63, died at his home Mon
day afternoon. He was a brother
of Henry Stone and Mrs. Ginio
Gentry of Clinton.
Ohter survivors include his
wife, three sons, a stepson, two
daughters, three stepdaughters,
eight other brothers, and another
sister.

Bryson Promoted
To Sergeant
James David Bryson, Jr. son
of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Bryson,
Sr., 609 Musgrove St., Clinton,
has been promoted to Sergeant
with the U.S. Air Force.
He is currently assigned to the
37th Security Police Squadron in
Phu Cat, Vietnam.
David )s a 1967 graduate of
Clinton High School. He finished
12 weeks of special Combat Ser
vice Training at Ft Campbell,
Ky., before leaving for Vietnam.
Mrs. Rice Heads
Credit Bureau
Martha Rice has been named
manager of Clinton Credit Bu
reau.
She formerly was associated
with Citizens Federal Savings and
Loan but has been with the Credit
Bureau in recent months. The
Credit Bureau is located at 101
W. Pitts St.
IN RECITAL — The Presbyterian
College Voice Recital this Sunday will
feature soprano Beth Lindsay of
Greenville, and baritone Sam Hobson
of Anderson, accompanied by Pat
Phillips of Greenville, on the guitar.
It is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Belk
Auditorium, and the public is invited.
Voice Recital Slated Sunday At Auditorium
Soprano Beth Lindsay of
Greenville and baritone Sam Hob
son of Anderson will present a
voice recital Sunday (April 27)
afternoon at 4 o’clock in Belk
Auditorium at Presbyterian Col
lege.
Both are senior students of
Charles T. Gaines, assistant pro
fessor of music at PC, who will
accompany them. Sophomore Pat
Phillips of Greenville will pro
vide guitar accompaniment for
two of Hobson’s numbers.
Miss Lindsay will sing arias
from a Bach cantata, and from
Mozart’s “The Marriage of Fi
garo,” Schuman’s song-cycle,
"Woman’s Life and Love,” and
“Vocalise” by Rachmaninoff.
Hobson’s numbers will include a
Bach aria, the lullaby from
“Songs and Dances of Death”
by Mussorgsky, two songs by Ned
Rorem, two Appalachian folk
songs and several pieces by
Kurt Weill and John Sacco.

Both students have been elect
ed to Who’s Who in American
Colleges and Universities. Miss
Lindsay is a member of Sigma
Kappa Alpha, senior academic
honor society. Hobson is editor
of PacSac, the college yearbook.

on active duty for 10 days in
the Office of the Chief of Naval
Chaplains in Washington, D. C.

ate for promotion by the Navy De
partment Naval Reserve chap
lains to the rank of lieutenant
commander. Having now served
over a quarter of a century in
