HOW CAN I?
By Anne Ashley
Q. How can I remove brown
spots that formed on the bottom
of my electric frying pan?
A. Place the pan in a large
plastic bag containing a cloth
saturated with ammonia, close
the bag with a rubber band leav
ing the handle containing the elec
tric element outside the bag. In
a few hours, remove the pan from
the bag, and you should be able
to wipe the spots off with ease.
Q. How can I remedy a high-
crown hat that dents easily?
A. You can give it extra rein
forcement by spraying the inside
of the crown with your favorite,
quick-drying hair spray.
Q. Have you any helpful hints
for hair that is hard to manage
after a shampoo?
A. Try using your spray on
your brush, instead of directly on
your hair. Then see how your hair
behaves -- and it won’t have that
sticky effect either that some
times results from an overdose of
spray directly on the hair.
Q. What can I do when perfun
has been dropped on my dresser
top?
A. Rub with rottenstoneanda
generous amount of lemon oil.
Polish with a clean cloth to which
has been added clean lemon oil.
Repeat this routine if the first
time around isn’t completely suc
cessful.
Q. How can I reclaim pototo
chips that have lost their fresh
ness?
A. Put them under the broiler
for a few moments, and this will
usually restore them to their or
iginal crispness. Be careful,
though, not to brown them!
Q. How can I deal with rust
that has accumulated on iron
railmgs outside my home?
A. First, remove therustpax-
ticles with emery paper or steel
wool. Then prime the iron with
red-lead (12 parts red-lead paste,
10 parts linseed oil, one par
turpentine, and one part dryer).
After this has dried, apply your
finish coat of paint over it.
Q. How can I impart a lovely
luster to varnished floors or wooi
work of any kind?
A. Cold tea is an excellent
cleaning agent. Many other such
tips on the care and cleaning of
woodwork are contained in my
household book.
Q. How can I easily stain an
unfinished picture frame?
A. You can do a good job of I
staining with paste shoe polish.
Let this dry as you would your)
shoes, then shine with a soft
cloth.

Dear Sally
By Sally Shaw
DEAR SALLY: A group of us
college fellows became embroi
led in a big discussion recently
about life expectancy in various
white-collar, higher-income oc
cupations. We are sure sdme
types of work offer greater long
evity that others, and we wonder
If possibly you might be able to
throw spme light on this irapor-
Ject OMEGA.
DEAR OMEGE: Some general
surveys have beeen made which
revealed that professional and
managerial men have longer life
expectancy, but so far as I know
there are no mortality tables ac
cording to specific occupations.
To tell you the truth, if certain
persons are more concerned over
living long than living successful
sonable man you’d ever want to
meet --but when he sits behind
the wheel of our car, all his good
qualities seem to fly out the win
dow. He rages over every seem
ing error on the part of other dr
ivers, swears at them, fumes and
frets, and even embarrasses me
sometimes by cranking down his
window and shouting imprecations
at other drivers. Is there any
thing at all I can do about this?
WITS END.
DEAR WITS END: Sit down
with your husband and talk this
out with him, and if he’s as nice,
kind, courteous, and personable
as you say in other things, he’ll
listen to what you have to say
about this bad habit of his and
how the only thing he’s accom
plishing with his fits of temper
ament is to wreck your nerves.

DEAR SALLY: I'm a girl soon
to be married, and have been get
ting a lot of fine wedding gifts. To
day, however, I opened a very
attractively wrapped gift box and
almost fell over when I discovered
it contained a dozen books of trad
ing stamps! How about this for a
wedding gift? STUNNED.
DEAR STUNNED: Well...this
is somewhat on the ‘unusual 1 ' side
but still from a practical view
point it’s not too much different
from a check or merchandise or
der... and certainly the itemsthese
stamps will redeem can be very
useful gifts for newlyweds.
DEAR SALLY: my husband is
making a nervous wreck out of me
whenever we’re out in the car to
gether. Normally, he’s the nicest

DEAR SALLY: I’m a widow of
44, considered more thanpassably
attractive, and have two children,
ages 10 and 12. Do you think it’s
all right for me to invite male
guests to my home for dinner now
and then, and possibly for an even
ing of TV or listening to my stereo
or would this be rishing too much
talk amount the neighbors? G.G.
DEAR G.G.: I say go ahead.
A woman of 44 is her own cha
peron usually these days, and the
presence of two children is fur
ther safeguard to her reputation.
S o long as you are a woman of
good principles and so long as
you invite men with the same kind
of principles, that’s all that mat
ters. And so far as the poss
ibility of any talk by certain
neighbors, this could come only
from very small minds.
