Scouts Study
Indian Lore,
Preparedness
Indian Lore, one of the most
popular Cub Scout program
themes, is scheduled for the
month of March, according to
Sam Williams, Scout commis
sioner of the Laurens District
Blue Ridge Council, Boy Scouts
of America.
In Laurens County, 10 CubScout
packs will include Indian crafts,
games, arts, dances, costumes,
and stories, as well as the study
of specific tribes in their week
ly den meetings. The monthly
pack meeting of each pack, which
is sponsored by a religious, civic,
school, or other community
group, will be a ceremonial night
featuring a program related to In
dian life and Indian-type cere
monies for the presentation of
advancement awards.
“The most important part of
the Indian Lore theme,” Will
iams explained, * is that the things
the Cub Scouts will do will be
authentic and ‘not Just playing
Indian’ ’.
The older Boy Scouts in March
will follow the theme Emergen
cy Preparedness, with the
month’s highlight being Scouts to
the Rescue, Williams said.
Activities that troops may in
clude in their weekly meetings
will be related to an emergency
feeding project and to troop and
patrol mobilizations and equip
ment.
In addition to the basic troop
program, many troops will also
schedule training to earn the nat
ional “Prepared” troop citation,
hold a parents’ night to discuss
summer camp plans, and take
part in a natural beauty clean
up project, Williams said.

List At Academy
Cadet Thomas G. Johnson, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. John
son of Clinton has been named
to the Superintendent’s List at
the U. S. Air Force Academy.
Cadet Johnson, a member of
the class of ’71, was selected for
his outstanding achievement in
both academics and military per
formance. He will be granted spe
cial privileges and wear a silver
star and wreath designating the
honor accorded him by the Aca
demy superintendent.
The cadet will be commis
sioned a second lieutenant anda-
warded a B.S. degree upon his
graduation from the Adacemy.
He is a 1966 graduate of Clin
ton High School where he was a
member of the National Honor So
ciety. He attended Presbyterian
College prior to entering the Aca
demy.

Q. How can I protect my brass
doornobs, escutcheon plates, and
other such ornamental hardware
from corrosion and pitting?
A. By periodically rubbing on
a thin layer of paste wax. Clean
thoroughly with metal polish or
scouring powder first, then rub
on the wax, and buff vigorously
when dry. Renew once or twice
a year to insure continuing pro
tection.
Q. What can I do about finger
nail polish that has been spilled
on waxed wood floor or tile?
A. Best to let it solidify be
fore doing anything. When the po
lish is barely solid and pliable,
it can be peeled right off. Smears
usually result when attempts are
made to wipe up the polish be
fore it has dried, or by using a
solvent on completely hardened
polish.
Q. How can I drill a hole in
glass?
A. Use a regular steel drill,
and keep the point of contact
saturated with camphorated oil
or turpentine or mineral spirits.
Don’t exert too much pressure--
let the drill do the work!
Q. There are some white pat
ches on my asphalt tile floor
where alcohol was spilled. How
can I remove these?
A. By rubbing a little baby oil
or olive oil into them.
Q. How can I remove the lime
deposits that have collected a-
round my faucets?
A. By rubbing with a clean
cloth sprinkled with a few drops
of vinegar. This treatment is also
good for removing water spots
from stainless steel sinks. Many
other such tips are included in
my new household manual.
Q. What can I do about rust
marks on my stainless steel
sink?
A. You can eliminate these
very easily by rubbing with light
er fluid. After the rust disap
pears, go over the sink with your
kitchen cleanser, and it will be
as bright and shining as when ne
Q. How can I increase the ef
ficiency of my carpet sweeper?
A. By dampening the brushes
of the sweeper slightly just be
fore using it, they will do a much
better job of picking up lint, dust,
uid the like.
Q. How can I, when hand sew
ing with double tliread, prevent
the thread from tangling?
A. You can go a long way to
wards preventing such tangling if
you’ll knot the ends separately
instead of together.

vigorating novel packed with ad
venture, action, tragedy, yet of
Christian tone and background.
It is “The Nine Lives of Al
phonse” by James L. Johnson
(J.B. Lippincott Company $4.95).
With the abundance of modern fic
tion cluttered with four-letter
words, profanity, and sex, such
a book shines out like a bright
star on a dark night.
The story tells of a daring at
tempt to rescue defectors from
Cuba. The Reverend Raymond
Sebastian is caught in a cross
fire between Castro’s forces, A-
merican intelligence agents, the
U.S. Navy, and the power-hungry
leader of a group of Miami Free
Cubans. He puts his life, his faith,
and the lives of many others on
the line when he commits them to
a desperate voyage in "Al
