BY DR. HKRDFRT SPAUGH
"Write siim<4hing about liquor,
and make it strong. If the peo
ple who were maimed and killed
each year by drinking drivers
were injured and killed by some
other form f disaster, we would
tie shouting it through the head
lines,” so pleads a correspond
ent.
The use f leverage alcohol
or liquor runs m cycles. I've
almost lived through one of them.
As a boy I remember saloons
as disreputable places which
spawned drunkards. By 1918, after
an intense course of education,
we thought we had had enough and
passed a law called the Vol
stead Act. Then we gave up our
educational program, went home,
and left it up to the law. It
didn't work. Crime and bootleg
ging followed.
Then we modified the law in
1933. First beer, then liquor, by
local option, state liquor stores.
Now the cry is for liquor by
the drink, which means bars a-
gain. But to make things w-orse
this time, we have women con
sumers of alcohol which we did
not have in 1917 and 1918. And
we have the automobile as a mur
der weapon.
I’ve just looked through my
recent violence file. Here’s a
case where a man was sentenced
for obscene phone calls. His law
yer offered as excuse, “These
telephone calls stem from liquor
on the weekends." Here’s another
one from Philadelphia: “Five men
were arrested early yesterday
and charged with raping a 37-
year-old housewife in the Jungle
Tavern. Included among those
charged with rape was the owner
of the taproom.
‘The woman told police she
walked into the taproom at 12:30
a.m. Before stie could sit down,
three men grabbed her, tore off
her clothes, threw her down on a
pool table. She said all five men
raped her. After two hours, they
let tier go, she said. She was
examined at PtnladelphiaGeneral
Hospital and released." A rather
casual report.
If you will take ttie trouble
to examine police records, you
will find that over half of the
automobile accidents involving
deatti and injury involve the use
of alcohol. Look what it is do
ing t' the streets and highways
which are littered with empty
bottles and beer cans. Yet we
want more and easier liquor. I’ve
never lieen able to understand the
reasoning f intelligent men,
many T them my friends, who
feel that liqu-r by the drink will
help solve >ur alcohol problem.
They never knew the saloon era.
The lug tr utile is ttiat as the
use of leverage alcohol has tie-
come so socially acceptable and
is served at the majority of so
cial functions, then these peoplb
drive automobiles home.
Alcoholics Anonymous has es
tablished the fact that problem
drinkers and alcoholics develop
from social drinkers.
