I •* -A Select Best Available Varieties Of Seeds BY M. L. OUTZ County Agent It is important to select good quality seed for the coming crop year. By all means select the Best Varieties known. Half the time the best isn’t good enough. I suppose plant breeders have done their best with corn, wheat and soybeans. Wheat yields are M. L. OUTZ, County Agent about twice what they were 30 years ago. Since corn has been hybridized it .too has taken a Jump in yield. I’m sure farmers can easily recall just a few years back when soybeans would shatter to a point that much of the crop would be lost. The yields were not near as good as they are to day with the new varieties. Another important field that has gotten along well with the breeder is the grain sorghum and forages. Hybrid varities now yield far more than the old type varieties. I’m sure that agronomists would not be happy to give all the credit to the breeder. Much of this credit goes to the better culture practices, higher fertili zation, etc. I’m sending to all the farmers on my mailing list a copy of the recommended crop varieties. If you aren’t on it then call our Of fice and we will get you on it. In the meantime I want to give the gardeners a few varieties that have been tested by Clem- son and should prove to be the best you can plant. Snap bean varieties are as fol lows: Astro, Bonus, Bush Blue Lake 274, Extender, Resistant Cherokee Wax, Harvester, Slen- derwhite and Tendercrop. I’m sure you will be happy with any one of those and at least some can be bought locally. A favorite of everyones is can taloupe so try one of the follow ing varieties: Edisto, Edisto 47, Gulfstream, Hale’s Best Jumbo, Smith’s Perfect. Everybody seems to have their own favorite and I’m sure you will enjoy one of them. I’m sure all gardeners would THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, do better to stick to tried varie ties. Seed should be treated. All you need to do is get Ceresan and put a very small amount in a jar with the seed and shake them up. Locate good seed now so that you can start off on the right foot. We have this list giving all recommended varieties if you want a copy just call the office. The plant breeders say: “Don’t hold on to an old variety just because you think it’s good, try new recommended varieties. They are more disease and Ne matode resistant. Jonathon Landlord starred as Ed and promised us a “really big shoe’ from the start. To begin the show with a great start, Joyce Garner charmed us as she danced in a very noticeable costume. Carolyn Freeman and Steve Han son gave a remarkable exhibi tion of talented ventrioquism with their dummies. Proceeded by an Exedrin commercial, Cousin Minnie Pearl flounced onto the stage and called out her famous ‘Howdy!’ She thrilled us with the practicing of her “clog’ in preperation for a ball in Wash ington, D.C. Nancy Lee Jacks was perfect for the part, right down to the $2.98 hat. Next, Russel Vance and Susan Cason starred in a short skit as two very, very ancient people who came down the mountain to be on the show. It kept us roaring the whole time: A television variety show would not be complete with out true variety - Phillis Diller! Molly Glover played it wonder fully. This ended the “staged’part of the show, but Ed had spotted some well known celebrities in the audience and felt it his duty to call our attention to them. First as Jim Neighbors of “Co mer Pyle, U.S.M.C.* - Mr. Billy Rhodes jumped up and shouted, “Surprise, surprise, surprise. Don Knotts ( Mr. Hack Prater) was there with his badge on, along with Mr. Lindsey Randall as Jonathon Winters. Mrs. Marion Neighbors took our breath away as she stood up as Granny on ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’. It was a hilarious show and Mrs. R. P. Wilder is the genius who wrote it We have a new teacher at school. Mrs. Grace Connor is now teaching chorus, but since she taught in the surrounding elementary schools, we can not say she is a new face. Recently one of the seventh grade students, Geraldine Saw yer, underwent surgery in Char leston. She was expected to re turn home Saturday. We are all looking forward to her return to school. S.
