ACES AUTO REPAIR SERVICE • MAJOR AND MINOR REPAIRS. • AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SPECIALISTS. E. Carolina Ave. — CALL — 833-2607 Families who have relatives stationed in Vietnam should plan ahead if they wish to talk with them by telephone during the approaching holiday season. This suggestion was made by Ray Fernell, Manager of South ern Bell Telephone Company here. "However, in most instances it is easier for a serviceman to call home than for his family to try reaching him in Vietnam,” Fernell said, “This is why ser vicemen are encouraged to noti fy their families in advance if they expect to telephone home, particularly around the holiday.'’ Fernell said that more than 38,000 calls were completed be tween the United States and Viet nam last year, four and a half times as many as in 1965. But most of the calls, he added were completed from the Vietnam end, rather than from the United States, because of the difficulty of locating servicemen when calls come in from the states. “Every effort is made to lo cate the serviceman when a call is received in Saigon but it is much more practical for the ser viceman to place the call on his own when he is able to do so,” Fernell said. Travel restrictions and cur fews imposed inSaigon inthepast have complicated the task of lo cating servicemen, Fernell ex plained. For this reason, he said that when a call is made to Viet nam, it is important for the caller to have the serviceman s unit, his APO number, and, if pos sible, a telephone number where he can be reached. Calls between the United States and Vietnam have been averag ing about 140 a day but this fig ure is expected to increase dur ing the holiday season. Saigon is 13 hours ahead of Clinton time.
