Gilliam Dies In Friday Wreck A 26-year-old Torrington Co employe was killed Friday morn ing when the car he was driv ing struck a tree on S. C. 66 (Joanna-Whitmire Highway) a- bout five miles west of Whitmire. Lloyd Elliott Gilliam of 923 Central Ave., Whitmire, ap parently was killed instantly in the 9:30 a.m. accident. A native of Lee County Va., he was employed by the Clinton Bearings Plant of the Torrington Company. The investigating patrolman said Gilliam apparently lost con trol of the car on a curve. The car ran off the road and struck a large pint tree about 30 feet off the highway. The left side of the car hit the tree. A passen ger inthe car, CharlesSeymoure, was not injured. Gilliam’s survivors include his wife, a son a sister and two brothers. Funeral serv ces were con ducted Sunday at Grace Baptist Church with burial in the Whit mire cemetery. * * * W. L Smith SALEM - William Lawrence Smith, 56, of Route 2, Salem, died Friday evening. He was a brother of Mrs. Edith Neal of Clinton. Other survivors include his wife, three brothers and six oth er sisters. W. A. Johnson KINARDS - Wister A. Johnson, 67, died at his home Sunday after noon. He was a lifelong resident of Newberry County, a son of the late Asa D. and Gertrude Daven port Johnson. He was a farmer and a member of Sharon Metho dist Church. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Emma Bobb of Newberry and Mrs. Lillie Merchant and Miss Alice Johnson of Kinards; and three brothers, Van and Pope Johnson of Clinton and Jacob J. Johnson of Kinards. Funeral services were con ducted Tuesday morning at Mc- Swain Funeral Home in New berry. Burial was in Sharon Methodist Church cemetery. Bonds Crossroad News MRS. N. A. SHOUSE Shady Grove 4-H Club will meet Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. at the Shady Grove Club House. Each member is asked to bring a gift. Boys are to bring a gift suitable for a boy and girls a gift suitable for a girl. At this meeting plans will be made to attend the Christmas Party at the ' Agricultural Building on Thursday night. Mrs. Margaret Berry is a pa tient at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Work man of Greenwood were guests of Mrs. N. A. Shouse on Sunday. Mrs. Texie Johnson and Mrs. David Pitts attended the Parents Day at Whitten Village on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Dean of Whitmire visited Mrs. Texie Johnson Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Hubert Spivey, Randal and Wanda Spivey visited Mrs. Spi vey’s mother in Gray Court on Sunday. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Mail Early Clinton Postmaster W. D. Adair urges postal patrons to mail their packages and greeting cards as soon as possible. Mailings brought to the Post Office early in the day help to relieve the late hour rush. New postal laws have eliminated the lower rate for greeting cards weighing an ounce or less. Therefore, all “regular” Christ mas cards will be mailed at the six cent rate this year. To assist patrons in their holiday mailings, the Clinton Post Office Stamp and Parcel Post Window will be open until 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. The money order andC.O. D. window will be open until noon on Saturday, Dec. 14. Mrs. Wilson ENOREE-Mrs. Emmaline Harbin Wilson, 79, of Route 1, Enoree, died Thursday afternoon in a Morganton, N.C., hospital. She was visiting a daughter. She was the mother of Lewis Wilson of Clinton. Other survivors include two daughters, three other sons, three sisters, two brothers, 23 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at Enoree Freewill Baptist Church with burial in Greenhaven Gardens. Mrs. Smith Mrs. Jessie McClimon Smith, 83, of 302 Elizabeth St., widow of J. J. Smith, died Sunday night in a Lexington nursing home. Clinton High Highlights BY UNWOOD COX The CHS Pep Club wishes to thank eachpersonparticipating in the sale of season basketball tic kets. The club members selling the largest number of tickets were presented cash awards. Rena Ramage received the first place award of $10, and Linwood Cox received the second place award of $5. Due to the promising suc cess of our basketball teams, the response to ticket buying was very good this year. If you didn’t buy a season ticket, come sup port the Mighty Red, anyway! This week at CHS has been de coration and project week. Mem bers of every homeroom were asked to decorate their class room doors. These doors will be judged later this week and the winning door will receive an a- ward. The Student Council will have a tough decision to make, for all the doors fully illustrate all phases of the Christmas sea son. Also, the Student Council is sponsoring a project which will be greatly' appreciated by many families during this Christmas season. Each homeroom is mak ing a food basket which will be given to needy families living in Clinton and the nearby vicinities. She was a native of Spartan burg County, daughter of the late B. She was a native of Cross Hill and lived in Charlotte for many years. She was employed at Southern Knitting Co., Charlotte. Surviving also are her parents; four sons, Eddie, Roger, Randy and Vonnie Brown Jr. of the home; and a daughter, Jeanette E. Brown of the home. Funeral services will be con ducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. James Gray.
